NB core voltage

Hello all, I own (unfortunately) an Asus P5N-E SLI mobo, and apart from few bits of positive stuff like good cpu vcore undervolting feature, I'm not very happy with the NB and SB chipset can reach extremely high temperatures. My version came with a naked SB chip and also naked mosfets in spite of th...

Another, more intrusive, option for cooling the PSU is to mount it upside-down, with air drawn through a hole in the roof. The PSU as such should be quieter that way, but it's also likely that you'll hear more of the noise. Cheers Olle Lol, my wife would probably think I've gone crazy if she caught...

I think the duct basically blocked most of the airflow to the PSU, that's why it became hot to the touch. I'd recommend looking into increasing the airflow in the case. Maybe speed up the intake/exhaust fans? I'm not sure if there's a simple solution for getting cooler air to the PSU. Yeah, my init...

Re: Newbie with a newbie rig

Update: Ok, so I made an air duct and installed it as shown here: http://www.postimage.org/aV14wz19.jpg Another pic: http://www.postimage.org/Pq1lihzA.jpg Temp measured at PSU exhaust fan/grill area with a simple thermometer reveals ~ 36-37 degrees C. Noise - no detectable difference compared with n...

Re: Rubber Grommet Hard Drive Screws Useless?

Hi all, Ok I have obsessed with making both of my pcs run as quite as possible. I have read the and searched the forums a few times and seems like everyone is saying that the rubber grommet screws for hard drives are totally useless? My case isn't built for rubber grommets but I figured I could eas...

Re: Newbie with a newbie rig

Update: I've followed the good advice and swapped the Arctic cooling fan with a Nexus 92mm case fan - did a weird mod using the same Arctic Cooling HS. :) Also installed a Zalman fanmate 2 and now CPU fan noise has been greatly reduced! I would guess at least half the noise is gone (Nexus @ 900-1000...

Yes, but are there any pci-e graphic boards that are short enough for a good airflow?

Yes, you should be able to plug it into the same connector, just leaving out the 4th pin. See: http://forum.thermaltake.com/files/4pin_or_3pin_fan_connector_on_m_b_362.jpg and http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-012074.htm . If the BIOS doesn't have an option for it, I'm 99% sur...

The 4-pin fan connectors used by the newer Intel stock heatsink/fans should be backwards compatible to 3 pin fans. If you're using the stock fan, there really isn't a simple/cheap way to put something in between because it's a PWM fan whose speed is determined by the 4th wire. It might be easier to...

Hardware question; 4-pin cpu-fan controller?

I've been looking for a fan controller that handles a 4-pin connected cpu-fan, something like Zalman fanmate or equivalent, but there seem to be none available. The reason for my search is that my Asus mobo (P5n-sli) only has a very simple Q-fan controller that doesn't work too well - at idle temps ...

Update:

Installed the 120 mm Scythe fan:

Works wonderful. I fastened the fan with stripes from an old IDE-cable. :-D

Maybe too efficient, the idle temp is 26 degrees C.

Unfortunately, I failed implementing lm_sensors (speedfan for linux).

Yeah, that can be a problem for passively cooled graphics cards. However, keep in mind that most graphics chips are rated for over 100°C (nVidia specs say 105°C for their newer cards). Not sure about the RAM or other components though. The GPU temperature doesn't seem to climb drastically, at lea...

Your idea isn't much different than what the Scythe Kama-Bay cooler does. If you have 3 empty 5.25 slots, you could always get something like this: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999141 I'm not sure about the dampening though. You might have to get rubber grommets if your ...

Newbie with a newbie rig

Hello all, First, I'd like to thank you all for providing great tips and tricks (not to mention the very inspiring pictures!) on how to get rid of general PC noise. I stumbled upon this website while googling up reviews about silent gpu-coolers. (the one that came with my geforce 7300gs was very noi...

I believe the 55 degree figure you're referring to is a non-operating environmental temp limit, not a drive temp one. No, i looked it up. Its the rated operating thermal limit. Non-operating thermal limit was much higher, somewhere around 70c. This entire thread though really only matters to 3.5" d...

I worked in a server qualification lab for a few years, and the upper limit for our hard drives was 40C. Anything higher, even under extended stress testing would fail qualification. Our drive designers said anything over 40C will shorten the lifespan of any hard drive. I would agree. Maximum 40 de...

I prefer running a boot-cd but I don't know how reliable the manufacturer's software is though.
