Agreed. Dell monitors (particularly the UltraSharp series) are very quiet, I have never heard any whine from any of them. And I've had at least 5 different models.

Same difference, usually the EARS is cheaper. It's newer and has the 64MB cache, but you'll never notice the difference between them; in acoustics or performance.

Re: Scythe Mugen 2 and fan brackets

Mugen 2 is a great cooler. I'm cooling a Phenom II X4 940 with it semi-passively. No fan on the CPU but running the top exhaust on my Antec 300 @ low and a Slipstream 800rpm in the rear.

I've yet to see it hit over 54C...

Re: Best 1-1.5TB drive for storage in HTPC

Blue is faster, Green is quieter...depends on what you want. Sizes will be a range of multiple platters. You won't see much performance change between them. The only concern would be compatibility with the advanced format drives. You need to align the partitions on drives larger than 1TB for WinXP/M...

The thicker the tile, usually the heavier it is, as well... Really, the last time I went looking, I walked up and down the local home improvement store and looked at the displays. Thanks for advise. Green looks like a good match, however, for some reason on Tomshardware forum ppl have complained that Green drives are actually LESS reliable and have advised against it... any feedback there? Also, how does the Green performance compare to Blue? The reason the Green's can be in...

Re: Do cases with dampening panels make that much difference

Windowed cases and quiet PC's don't really get along well. Acrylic windows are usually very lightweight, brittle and not secured very well. This means they will likely transmit vibrations quite well. You can selective dampen the panel with some cut-and-stick matting, but depending on how large the w...

Re: Opinions on this build?

Agreed, the OP's choices are sound. For the poster asking about the 320GB drive with a 667GB platter, that drive is "short-stroked" in firmware which only uses the outside (fastest spinning) portion of the platter at the cost of storage space. It's kind of like CPU binning, except performance goes u...

Re: Time to replace VX550?

What case do you have? I wouldn't spend MORE for a Kingwin over a more powerful Seasonic... 550W should be more than adequate for anyone except the extreme SLI gamer, provided a high-quality PSU is chosen. However, before plunking down a bunch of cash on a new PSU, maybe you could consider a fan swa...

Antec DF-85 Review

UNBOXING Upon opening the box, you realize how big this case really is. I was a little prepared for this case after seeing the new LanBoy Air in comparison to my old Antec 300. But this is a FULL-SIZE ATX case. It’s very well packed in heavy-cushioned polyethylene foam. It’s also wrapped in a PE ba...

Re: Best 1-1.5TB drive for storage in HTPC

If it's just a secondary drive for media storage, definitely go with a Green. If for no other reason than they are usually 20% cheaper and for secondary storage, you won't notice ANY difference. If a 5400rpm drive can't load your media quick enough, then you need different media... I have a 500GB Bl...

Re: Is 183 dual-chamber design good for fanless PSU?

Honestly, I don't get the run on passive PSUs. In most cases, they all suffer from some coil whine that ends up being audible at VERY low levels. It's much safer and cheaper to find a semi-passive or actively cooled PSU, that are almost dead-silent. I've had Seasonic S12's, Antec Earthwatts, Corsair...

Re: Advice on a suitable cpu cooler

I also like the Scythe Mugen 2. In most cases (pun intended) you can run it without a fan, just a large, slow fan nearby if your VRMs have adequate heatsinks on them. It's cheaper than most Noctua's, but I've used it on 65W C2D, 95W Phenom II X3's, and 125W Phenom II X4's, and never seen one go high...

If migrated many systems from one HDD to another using WD's Acronis utility. I've never had a problem except with my initial trial of it back in 2005 (Windows MCE 2005), and a simple reinstall of a driver cured the problem. I can't attest to the verify function, however. I would never try to clone a...

Re: UPS modding for coil whine?

I wouldn't mess with the internals of any UPS. They are so fickle to temperature and voltage protection (to protect your equipment) that you'd be more likely to cause more problems than fix the original. Coil whine with some UPS's is unfortunately unavoidable, given the PFC level of certain componen...

Re: Help with matching front and rear case fans

If you intake is filtered, positive airflow has it's benefits. If not, then you just end up with the noisier and more powerful fan closer to your ears.

Usually, you'll see the most powerful fan as the exhaust, and no intake fan at all, unless your HDDs or GPU suffer from high temps.

I don't think you will get proper support on any chipset without a Phenom II processor. You need the HT3.0+ capable processors for the full-feature support for IDCT and sharpening, if I'm not mistaken. I think you'll find that many AM3 boards will support AM3+ processors just fine, only without offi...

Re: Best $40 Hard Drive - low noise and good performance

If you have adequate cooling in the area (as in a fan in front of the HDD or your HDD is directly in the path of the intake air) you should consider implementing some type of isolation on your HDD mounting. Grommets can help, but even some small pieces of soft foam or felt wedged in between the HDD ...

You may also want to consider a 2.5" drive like the WD Scorpio Black. If you have an easy way to suspend it, it should perform as well as any other "quiet-oriented" 3.5in drive running at 7200rpm.

Might cost you a little extra though...

I would also use a second tool, like CoreTemp, to confirm the readings coming from SpeedFan. Sometimes SpeedFan doesn't configure/label the temp sensors properly, but CoreTemp only focuses on the on-package sensors for the CPU.

Again, your issue is not likely to be hardware related, unless you have a faulty connector. FWIW, the thump you're hearing wh...

1. Not necessarily. However if you have a standard resolution display (720p/1080p or any of the *XGA resolutions), most video cards will be able to automatically configure to the native resolution of your display. I never had to configure the resolution of my AMD based HTPC, but I did have to manual...

Consider that Antec is not likely to design an entirely new part for such a small update when it won't apply to all hardware. Until USB3 headers are standard on all motherboards, you won't see most mainstream case makers including headers that cant be used as such. And given that Antec already makes...

Re: Static/Crackling Noise in HTPC Set-up (Grounding?)

Sounds like a driver or configuration issue to me. A bad cable could cause the issue, but unlikely. Maybe a bad connector on the mobo. It's not likely to be interference if the signal doesn't travel in an analog form. Did you ever have it working with HDMI without crackling. I had an issue with my l...
