Old Noctua NH-U12 getting long in the tooth?

So I bought my trusty NH-U12F some 3 years ago, and it's done a good job, but three years is a long time, and looking at the updated CPU coolers list, I wonder if it's time to get a new cooler? Quoting the NH-U12P review: The NH-U12P is substantially better than the original U12 So where does that p...

I'd say its the HS causing turbulence or something. For example, I've heard two identical fans placed in front and behind a tower HS have very different noise profiles when run independently of each other.

How do *you* pronounce "Kaze"?

So it occured to me, that the reason why Scythe had all these Japanese names for their products is because it is a Japanese company. Now names like "Kabuto" and "Mugen" may be pronounced somewhat differently in English to Japanese, the structure is still mostly the same. But what about "Kaze"? The "...

Optical drives are noise, there's no way around it. You could try limiting the drive speed, if you don't mind slower data transfer. The old go-to tool was Nero Drivespeed, but it's been split off into a seperate company , where you have to pay for a licence. You can still try it for 30 days though, ...

I think...the fact that you used an off the shelf CPU cooler, and that you mentioned that you were emulating an i7 in terms of heat load is causing many to incorrectly go into "CPU cooling test" mode, so to speak, as opposed to seeing the setup as a controlled test load for fans. =\

Would it have anything to do with static pressure? Perhaps the Noctua is "sucking" up plenty of air, but can't really push it through the fins of the sink, and a lot of the air is kinda venting out the side.

If you forced all air to go through the vane, perhaps through a funnel of sorts, I imagine it would create artificial impedance.

Oh, and while I am asking for the world, what about turning down the wattage on the block down to levels that many people use in their systems here? Something closer to 40-60 watts - would this have any effect on the data? Might be an interesting experiment, and once you have the fan all rigged up,...

I'd be interested in how similar the 500W PSUs are to the 600W. Can't get the 500W units in Australia as far as I can tell. Thing that ticks me off is that I can't get an 87+ unit that isn't more expensive than the CP-850...which is ridiculously overpowered, and also less efficient...but I might end...

The article is more of a showing of the new fan testing methodology using common quiet computing fans, rather than an article of fan comparisons. I'm sure they'll get around to testing other fans soon.

Hm...okay. I don't pretend to know a lot, but isn't an exponential function the inverse of a logarithmic function? I guess if you look at it one way, yes they're the "same" so to speak, but they gave them separate names for a reason, right? Your graph seems to look like a log graph to me: it asympto...

The relationship between airflow and temperature invariably becomes exponential at some point.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you mean logarithmic? We're talking about diminishing returns, right?

While definitely not silent computing oriented, Bit-Tech just published a rundown of GPU coolers. Reading now, and the results are interesting to say the least. BT seems to have terrible experiences with Arctic Cooling coolers.

Looks like you got yourself an aging box there. Not terribly slow, but if I were to guess off the top of my head, I reckon you could match, and probably beat that system with $500-600 if you were to build a new computer. Just a guesstimate, so YMMV

Also, I think it needs to be said...a fan is a fan. Yes, some are better than others in terms of silence, but I get the feeling some people here think some fans are much much better performers than others! In reality, this simply isn't true. SPCR's reviews with a control fan gives us a semi-accurat...
