I looked into that netgear NAS device when I was in a similar position. I'd do some research on it first, because the reviews I found were pretty awful causing me to ultimately go in another direction. The major negatives that I remember were: --insufficient cooling --compatible only with newer ATA-...

I have a couple of points about the HDD foam. Its quite well documented that Samsung drives are a few degrees warmer than what they claim (4-5C a guess). I am far more concerned with NOT loosing my data than a few DB's that I would not ever consider that. However its your data not mine.!!! If you w...

Does that foam help to kill the whoosh noise from your Samsung? If so, where did you get the foam. Is it not helpful to put foam on the underside of the hard drive? The foam helps tremendously. With it, I have real silence - I can't hear the machine, even seeking, at a distance of about 1 meter. Th...

Re: looks familiar :)
Advice: I use an wood box sealed all around my sistem. You can't hear it iven at nigth! Totaly silent! That was the goal here, but without the wooden box! I seem to have succeeded. Temperatures are stable in the safe zone even under load, and I can't hear anything from this machine -- and I l...

You're better off going with isolation mounts like these: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/Fanisolators.html
However, unless you have a very quiet computer already, and have traced some of your noise specifically to resonance from the fan to the case, you might not notice any difference.

My totally silent low-power rig!
I've finally managed to get my system to the point I'm really happy with it. This should do me until I break down and finally upgrade, probably with the release of Vista. Anyhow, I've been on a long journey to quiet my system over the past few years. It started with an extremely noisy cpu fan that I...

The 120mm Antec tri-cool fan is remarkably quiet on "low." Depending on the noise level of the rest of your system, it may not be worth replacing it. If you are using the SmartPower 400 PSU that comes with that case, the fan in the PSU is probably louder than the tri-cool on low. My Smart Power 350,...

My next thought was the Silverstone st30nf, which seems PERFECT for me right now, but I imagine I’ll be forced to upgrade my system in the next year or so, and the Silverstone does not support PCI express as I understand it. I don't know where you got that impression. As my sig clearly shows it sup...

Chances are, the reason for the NeoHE PSU not working with your motherboard is its ATX12V v2.xx compliance. Your system is old enough that its current draw on the AUX12V might not be high enough; I know that this is a source of some incompatibilities between PSUs that comply with the latest ATX12V ...

Advice needed on picking a truly silent PSU
Hey all, I’ve been working on quieting my system in increments over the last year or so, and while it is now nearly silent by most standards, I’d like to take it to the next level. I’m still running an old 1.4 ghz Celeron based system, which is realistically good enough for my needs right now, and h...

If you used Linux/SAMBA you would not require a keyboard/display except for the initial install. However if you are not familiar with Linux/SAMBA (a steep learning curve) you are probably better getting an XP Home OEM copy and using free UltraVNC installed as a service to provide remote keyboard/di...

I would recommend the Synology DiskStation. No disk included, excellent features and a web management interface. I bought one of these to the company I work for and it has been working reliably from the beginning. I looked them up, and a quick google search didn't return any distributors in the US....

Keep in mind, the remote desktop server is only avialable under XP-Pro, and it doesn't allow you to standby/restart/shut-down the remote machine. Try realVNC or something similar. One additional thing that might interest you. If you don't want your file server running 24/7, you can use Depicus' wol...

Instead of buying a copy of XP use a Linux distrubtion with SAMBA. Will give you web based administration. Can you elaborate a bit on what web based administration exactly means? Yes, silencing my drives locally is being worked on. My main Samsung drive is nearly inaudible being suspension mou...

Thanks for the replies all. After looking into it a bit more, it appears that NAS, while available for the Home market, is in reality, still in development. The Netgear SC101 was appealing, because it offered two drive capacity for $100. While the easily accessed magazine reviews were lukewarm to po...

Network Attached Storage rather than Drive Enclosures?
In my quest for quiet I've not too surprisingly come to the conclusion that the best way might be to move my noisiest storage drives out of the room. I have a Samsung 80gig main drive that is by far my quietest drive (below the noise floor of my PSU for now)...however my two storage drives are very ...

I wouldn't be at all concerned about that CPU temperature. 40c is quite normal. In fact if that CPU fan is adding any significant noise you might research the max safe temp for your cpu - some of those Athlon's can safely go quite high - and experiment with turning off that fan. I've been running my...

Ok, I talked to Roscoe today and he referred me here http://www.duxcw.com/faq/ps/ps4.htm to test my supply. Doing this the fan does in fact come on, but connecting it to my MB with nothing else connected, it doesn't. This would leave me to believe this is a compatibility issue rather than a flat out...

New Antec P150 case-PSU DOA or not compatible with my board?
So, just got my P150 case today to migrate my old system over to it. I'd heard about the problems with the PSU but decided to take a chance as the case was exactly what I was looking for anyhow. So built it up, and fired it up once before connecting it to the monitor etc. It worked once, so I turned...
