I have a gainward 260 gtx, and speedfan can detect the GPU temp, but not the fan speed, and AFAIK cannot control the GPU fan. Rivatuner can however. (As an aside: I have the alternative cooling model 260... I would not recommend it. It seems they added an extra fan and then cheaped out on the heatpi...

I prefer variable... but I probably push my system (overclock) more than the average SPCR'r, so I appreciate the extra cooling ability when my system is pushed, and quiet when it doesn't (which is most of the time, ie surfing the web extra). So, my preference is very much automated variable speeds. ...

The sunbeam rheobus extreme (which has no LCD, and hence doesn't meet all your requirements) comes with some splitter cables that allow you to plug the fan into your motherboard but get powered via the controller. In this way you can use your favourite monitoring software to watch the fan speeds and...

Something like this doesn't look terrible, and shouldn't be too bad from a noise point of view either:

Although, before you try this, you should leave the door open a small amount and see if you do actually get circulation and cooler PC temps in there.

You are right, push vs pull makes a difference, and possibly the fan thickness. I suspect you are worrying about it too much. A system like that is going to be running very cool, so almost any case should be fine. Just replace the fans with something decent (in fact one fan will likely do). That said, given you are trying to save money, why not pick up a cheap 2nd hand system? ...

Those temps actually seem reasonable to me. Furmark is a beast, and heats up your card like no real application will, and your other temps do not increase massively while running it. 89c is on the warm side, but not outside what is acceptable for graphics cards. If you are still worried, perhaps you...

I am not sure you can stop it spinning up to 100% at boot. This happens very early in the process, the only possibility that I can see is to edit the bios, however, I am still not sure that will work anyway (its worth a shot of course, if the alternative is replacing the card). Rivatuner will only a...

If you don't want to flash the bios, you can create a scheduler event in RivaTuner that runs "on resuming from Suspended mode" that sets the fan how you want. I'd suggest you do not try and flash the bios from within windows... use a DOS bootdisk (or USB key) if you are going to try that option. To ...

No, you shouldn't need any cooling there. They are fairly heat tolerant and you are not overclocking... of course, it does depend on your ambient temps and the air flow inside your case. Ideally you should have some airflow over them. Once you get a powerful (read: hot) video card in that case, you ...

Some fans have a higher static pressure, and hence are better suited for heatsinks. Case fans generally have little flow obstruction so do not need as high static pressure. In general, fatter (ie 38mm vs 25 or 20mm) fans have a higher static pressure. You will find this information more on water coo...

I am not 100% sure this is correct for AMD CPUs, but I think it is. "Unlocked" means you can adjust the multiple above the default. Locked means you can adjust down but not up. ie, my Q6600 has a multiplier of 9 and is "locked". I can still adjust this anywhere from 6-9, but not above 9. Of course I...

You are talking about the upcoming i3 chip, which will be intel's first 32nm chip (well gulftown should be same time).
2 cores, 4 threads, graphics on a separate die but same package.
Details seem very sparse!

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3184&p=6 this article argues against LLC, and goes into nice detail about why its not safe. vdroop is part of the intel spec, so its not inherinentely bad. Regardless of my thoughts on 'too hot' at load, an idle temp of 84 is way too hot. Temps will jump significantly once you put any kind of load on it, and will throttle. People are overclocking to 4 GHz with some pretty good cooling systems, ie with high speed fans. Overclocking and SPCR do not often...

An idle temp of 84 is *way* too hot. Under load that will jump up by 20-30 degrees. Not to mention, you want some head room for warmer weather. Lastly, running the chip near (or at) its thermal cut off point can reduce its life. Also, just getting to bios does not mean the system is stable. My guess...

Have a look at Rivatuner. Its possible your graphics cards fan is set at a stupid (read: 100%) level unnecessarily. You may be able to quiet it done a lot while its idle, and only have it ramp up when stressed. EDIT: To answer your actual question: Gigabyte has a passively cooled 4850 which might wo...

Check the motherboard manual or whatever doco you can find. I remember seeing (on the guru3d gigabyte forums) a claim that the mobo fan header on my board could support up to 1 amp, which worked out to about 3 fans.
