2) People content with 80 GB of storage space are also content with an old HDD Actually, far from it. 64 or 80 GB is more than enough for a standard office setup, and comfortable for a programming setup. As a programmer, I would absolutely love a 80 GB SSD in place of the slow 160 GB 7200.7 in my c...

I've never tried, but I'd assume that even with plug connected and voltage available, no power will flow... The power doesn't go straight into the CPU, it passes through mobo's voltage regulators, which I assume wouldn't be on if the board isn't on. The relay is not a bad idea, but you'd need an ove...

Aluminium does conduct heat quite well. Air, on the other hand, conducts quite badly. Heat transfer from components and heatsinks, through air, across the width of the case, and into the aluminium case is negligible. You might have a case for the distance between back of motherboard and the tray/rig...

Pin layout on 4-pin PWM headers is ground, 12 V, RPM (speed reporting), PWM signal. Pin layout on 3-pin motherboard fan headers is ground, 12 V, RPM (speed reporting). In principle, there is nothing preventing a 3-pin plug in a 4-pin header from working, but a motherboard may throw a fit if it doesn...

The Asus was the cheapest 780G motherboard I could find at the time of ordering. I wanted 780G over 740G mostly for the four RAM slots. There wasn't much to it, but I don't see much wrong with the Asus, either. With regards to airflow and thermal zones, I had at first read that you were going to use...

So that "a bit later" took a bit longer than I expected. I haven't finished my build, or even booted up the mobo yet; I'm hoping to be done on the weekend if you'll still be interested in the experiences. I actually have the 5050E, but on the other hand lack any HD content to test with. There are li...

You're running a 5600+? Can't seem to find one of those... best I can find is a 2.5GHz 4800+ - and its 20 bucks more than the 7850! <g> I'll have a longer reply a bit later, but by NCIX and Canada Computers prices, the 2.6 GHz 45 W 5050E is a sliver cheaper than the 7850. Not exactly unlocked, of c...

In terms of snappiness, unless you know it's not a constraint, I'd suspect the hard drive first and foremost - an SSD with minimal seek time should do a lot to help with that. Then again, a speedier CPU won't hurt. I'm not sure what kind of loads would be involved for HDHR. If your utilization goal ...

Have you purchased these components yet, or is there any particular reason you want the X2 7850 BE? The BEs are 95 W TDP parts, and while in actual use they might not reach that, it still seems a bit excessive. I know the 7850 is nicely priced, but if you're really going to be using it for movies on...

Indeed. A couple of mitigating factors: - usually the non-use period will be measured in weeks or months, not years - drives will be in original packaging (with silica gel, sealed, etc), and hopefully in reasonably climate-controlled environment most of the time - DOA does happen ;) I don't know of ...

However, as long as you spin them up regularly One has to spin them up regularly? I don't know. I recall reading somewhere that it's not particularly healthy to let drives sit unused for extended periods of time. I imagine fluid bearing drives have at least a potential for problems with the fluid p...

I think two hard drives, from different manufacturers, made at different time, stored at two different locations (a drawer at work, for instance, to protect against a house fire/burglary) should be reasonably safe. It won't protect you from both drives failing while off at the same time, a city-wide...

maybe so, but i do know that my corsair memory 2x1 gb @ 800 mhz wouldn't clock down to its advertised spec of 4-4-4-12. And that pissed me off. the OCZ memory I had for a while was OK, but I couldn't do anythign with it, take it out of spec in either direction for various overclocking needs with th...

IMO, get the cheapest RAM from a major, trusted manufacturer. (One thing to keep in mind is that several companies are just branding other manufacturers' products.) Among those, individual sample variance, DOA duds, and so on, will make more of a difference to any individual purchase than difference...

As I see it, openness of a case is on a funny continuum. If you are going totally passive with no forced convection at all, then you want a case as open and as large as possible. The moment you add a slow fan, you want an almost-closed case, except for very well defined intake and exhaust areas. As ...

Heads-up: DA-2 220 W 12 V brick, $26 ebay BIN shipped to US
Hi all, found this while strolling around eBay looking for a cheap-ish power brick. Ultimately shipping to Canada killed the deal for me, but it seems to be a decent price for those in U.S. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220433753900 As a brief introduction, this is a Dell-branded...

Re: quiet fans and noise reference
Bunk, fake, bullshit, lies. Be very very mindful of manufacturers' "specifications" for fans (and this doesn't go for just SilenX - as Neil pointed out, the Scythe 8 dBA are fake too).rkaye wrote:072/14 -- SilenX IXP-74-14 Ixtrema Pro 120mm x 25mm Case Fan 72CFM 14dBA $18
