Is larger fan (20cm) much more quiet than smaller fan?

It's easy to understand larger fan can be more quiet than smaller fan. Given the same CFM, it runs slower and results less rotation noise . But I'm very interested that which is the dominant portion (or weight) of fan noise, rotation noise (related with rotation speed) or airflow caused noise (relat...

They soon anounce a Raven 2 with more conventional appearance (smaller size) meanwhile keep the similar internal design (3 bottom fans?), with a cheaper price (in China, it's ~180 US dollars).

Recently I got a NeoPower 430 A5 (means 5th version), but it failed on my desktop (can't start up, even the PSU fan can't run), with following components.

Intel E8300, no OC
Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3 (Rev 2.1)
ATI HD3650
2GB DDRII800 x 2

Is sound damping very useful to reduce noise (Sileo 500)?

After read its review ( http://www.silentpcreview.com/article946-page5.html ), I was very surprised by the SPL recordings. Its two stock fans has a SPL of 12dB SPL at 7V. But in IGP idle mode, the noise level can still be as low as only 15dB, which means that the combined SPL of the CPU fan, PSU fan...

Thanks very much, I can understand it now. Though in theory there is the so called sound masking effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auditory_masking), different sounds have different characters (e.g. different spectrum and tones). Unless it becomes somewhat "white" like noise (flat spectrum), our ...

Now I have another another question, what's the perceivable noise level in a quiet room? I know it is difficult to answer, but wish to get a general answer or a range. I'm planning my quiet PC upgrade, but don't know whether the combined noise of all components is low enough :-) CPU fan: 12cm@600rpm...

I got a NeoPower 430 in the past few days (to replace my EA-380, for its modularity & excellent silence with low load), but not able to make it work with my system. Even worse, my motherboard is broken then. So, I turned to the TruePower New again. I found some reviews ( http://www.pcper.com/article...

I'm also using a 3-pin CPU fan on my Gigabyte MB (GA-EP35-DS3), but the MC is so mediocre that even don't have an option of "Voltage" in BIOS to control the fan speed. There is only one option, i.e. "Enable Smart Fan Control". Generally MB uses Voltage to control the fan speed if the fan is 3-pin, j...

I always thought there is no much difference on SPL for those best fans. One fan is enough to me :-)

Is there a updated SPL for the recommandated fans?

Previously SPCR's ambient noise level is 19dB when testing those fans, but recently they improves it to a much smaller value. Then the problem is, the previous data is no longer usable for reference, especially for low speed recording. My interest is: Is there an updated SPL for those best rated fan...

Thanks for your advice! I will consider buying a P18X again, it's very difficult for me to make a choice between P182 & P183 :-)

Regarding RC-534, I don't have a fan mounted on the side panel, actually I use some sound proof material to close the side panel since last summer.

As a software programmer, I prefer using some intellegent logic (which can be implemented in a simple micro-controller) comparing to temperature only solution, though I know it's totally different between software development and PSU implementation. If output temp is smaller than predefined safe thr...

Generally I can't agree more with you in most points, thanks a lot for clarification! If so, if I find my PSU is not quiet as expected, maybe I shouldn't replace it with a quieter PSU immediately, but try to improve my case's air flow first. Improving airflow into the case might be cheaper than buyi...

Thanks for your explanation! Later I read the SPCR test rig carefully and it does make sense to me. Is PSU fan speed controlled by temperature only?

In most reviews, I saw a picture showing the relationship between power load (in Watt) and fan speed or SPL ( http://xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/antec-psu-roundup_5.html ). It looks like the fan is adjusted according to power load. The higher load, it runs faster. From some SPCR's review a...

It's the so called "TruePower New Series", reasonable price (comparing to other modules with similar spec) with attracting features such like 80PLUS Bronze, Modular, and PWM fans. But I didn't find any review in SPCR, has any one used it and can provide some comments? URL: http://www.antec.com/Belie...

Thanks for reply! I agree with you that the PSU may be the problem. I guess its' fan rate is over 1000rpm. I once considered replacing the PSU's fan but give up finally. One reason is that most models reviewed by SPCR are not available in China. Another reason is that replacing PSU's fan is not as e...

Need advice for quiter system upgrade

I built my desktop last year before I found this website. Though learned many new things since then, the system is already done and what I can do is to slightly modify partial components, currently it looks like so: CPU: Intel E8300 (2.8GHz, no OC) Cooler: Thermalright HR01-PLUS + Scythes FLEX-E @ 6...
