Alternative Energy / Living as much off-the-grid as possible
Isn't the preponderance of your electric power in B.C. sourced from hydroelectricity? Probably around 80%, but dams also have serious ecological impact and demand is rising at 1.7%, and plans are afoot to build new power generation sources. Almost regardless of what they build, it will have some ki...

For the life of me, I don't understand this obsession with CPU idle power consumption. It's somewhere on the order of only 15% of the power draw of the system at idle (with a low power system). Furthermore, your getting all hot and bothered about 2 - 3w; that's like $0.25 worth of electricity in a ...

Cheaper to run your printer on Blood
"For ages we have been saying that printer ink provided by HP was obscenely expensive. However now a graph has appeared on the internet which confirms that it is the most expensive fluid in the world. (Not really, bull seamen still costs more. sub.ed.) The graph shows that human blood is pretty expe...

AMD 235e v. Athlon64 X2 3600+ Brisbane
I have the Brisbane uv to 1.008v. I upped the FSB to 220, so 2.2GHz. It seems fast enough for what I do with the computer, surfing and HTPC and no gaming. Would the AM3 235e, 2.7 GHz and 45w and 4000mhz hyper transport and 2mb cache, use less power, but also offer a noticeably snappier performance? ...

I grabbed my 605e from ExcaliberPC almost a month ago now. It's been darned hard to find and in fact the first store I found in North America was in a Canada seller that didn't ship to the US. Argh! And now Excaliberpc shows it as a "discontinued item" Seems like there are some strange availability...

The 905e is 65W, so if you want the lowest TDP (AMD) quad core possible (45W) you'll have to go for an Athlon II (600e, 605e). As far as I know there's no Phenom II with 45W TDP at the moment. Does anyone know where I can purchaee the Energy Efficient Athlon II processors (eg. 240e, 600e, 605e) in ...

"The passive cooling on the CPU does require a system fan, for optimal cooling. The heat sink measures 36mm off the upper side of the main board. DO NOT use this board without a fan in the system." quoted from OP's link. so while it may be a very good solution it is not what I would call passive. It...

Were you happy with ZZF packaging?" Very much so. It was in a clear plastic box which itself was tightly packed into a Styrofoam box with a pull out tray. This was all packed in a brown cardboard box with ample Styrofoam "peanuts". I don't think anyone could expect it to be packed any better. The or...

Ordinarily I wouldn't suggest it as a cheap drive but right now the Samsung drive seems to be in high demand and the price has been distorted. Okay, everybody start rubbishing the Samsungs. Has anyone else been playing around with these? I watched the Ninja Assassin trailer with my Asus 3450 card and cpu pegged at 100% a number of times. CPU is an old Brisbane 4000x2 OC'd to 2.6. USA's Annual Military Day
Veteran's Day in the USA (November 11) originally was a day to remember those who gave their lives in defense of their country. Now it is something a little different. I have misgivings about how militaristic the USA has become. It is difficult to get elected to office if you aren't a veteran (jingo...
