Re: SPCR's Holiday ATX Gaming Build Guide
For me the most interesting part was the 10C drop after modding the Define R4. While it is regarded as a very good SPCR-class case, it's obviously still far from optimal. A case that would dampen noise like the stock R4 (or better) while providing less resistance to airflow waits to be born. Someth...

Re: My silent desktop pc and gaming rig (4790k + 280x)
Silent and problem free makes for a pretty boring thread. How about some bonus stuff to keep things interesting 1) I picked up one of these bad boy dusters a few days ago and Holy Cat 5 Hurricane Batman! I will never go back to compressed air again. This thing is seriously awesome and blows dry air...

Re: Samsung 840 EVO Restoration tool
The restoration process took me 40min with 110GB on the drive. Maybe it'll be shorter with empty drives. <shrug> That's probably correct because I have about 20GB and it took me 20 min on my Samsung 840 EVO 120GB. The latter part of the restoration seemed like the software just re-writing over the ...

Re: GTX 750Ti sips power
The Hardocp article cites the fans as starting at 300 RPM, which is really noteworthy considering how ridiculously high the lowest setting on most stock fans on GPU coolers is (1000+ RPM). However the article fails to mention what this maximum RPM rating is that we're seeing 50% of, at least I coul...

Thank you very much for those references. The reviews actually rate the g-450 as 'quiet', however this comment you attached is really making me want to avoid this unit :o Don't mind me . I've also been looking at the Seasonic G-450, more for its price and modularity than for its power, but I couldn't find anywhere comments about how if performs acoustically. Looking for PSU that fits next to bottom 140mm fan
I've been searching for a 400-600W PSU that will fit next to a bottom mounted 140mm fan in a Fractal R4 case. My requirements are standard: efficient, quiet, and reliable. If the PSU fan is facing down for intaking air, then its connectors cannot be at the bottom, otherwise they will be blocked by t...

That would be great then, because that would merit the S series CPUs since they would be more efficient on lighter loads and achieve the same max GHz on load. That would also make the lower price on the S version strange.

Re: the dreaded S chip.
AFAIK Intel Turbo Boost isn't as straight-forward as the GHz is labelled. The 3.60 GHz Turbo doesn't mean that all 4 cores will be able to reach that frequency; there's a certain calculation based on the base clock frequency, which the non-S version here obviously is higher (faster). http://en.wikip...

How important are heatsinks on motherboards?
My future build will include an H87 matx mobo. I have the Asus H87M-E planned, but I recently found out it lacks proper heatsinks. How much of a difference is there temperature-wise and longevity if I won't overclock? Asus H87M-E: http://content.hwigroup.net/images/products_larges/186839/1/asus-h87m...

Re: A new PSU in the 300-400W range?
I plan to get the Seasonsic G450 in my future build mainly due to the G360 not available at the place I want and not modular. I also thought about the V450S, but the TechPowerUp review on the bigger V550S and its discussion forum reveals less than desirable quality is discouraging.

Because the chart doesn't cross compare the fans that way. The green numbers represent the first place winner at each of the dBA levels. I think that's doing it the wrong way around. You should be looking at quietest fan at a certain temperature level. Remember that this is SPCR and therefore the f...

Re: Why I won't recommend a Haswell system until August+
Heat and temperature is not the same thing. A die shrink often reduces heat but increases temperature; less heat but smaller area. That Intel uses crappy TIM once again, making overclocking more difficult is another story. And really disappointing as you say. If each die shrink raises temperature, ...
