Holy flirking schnit, it works! zsero, you're a star as far as I'm concerned. I've been slightly infuriated that Vista keeps spinning up my data drive when it should be idle, but haven't known of any way to keep it shut down. It took me a little bit of googling to figure out what mountvol is and how...

I started to read the article on Yahoo. I read as far as as I needed to, then I sighed, shook my head and looked at some comic strips.

I couldn't agree with you more, artside1. Hypocrisy: the one true religion. 'Cause we've all visited its altar from time to time.

That's great to know. 43C is pretty good for an i7 920, unless I'm mistaken. And if it's quiet as well at 1300rpm then that's fantastic news from my point of view. Thank you for posting your results. I don't intend to use one for the same purpose as yourself, but it's always helpful to find out as m...

Many thanks for the responses. I guess I'm going to have to settle for windowshopping for a while then *sigh* To be honest I've never really looked at Intels properly because I've always felt they were out of my price range, but maybe that could change. And if things don't change within six months a...

Hypothetical build (ETA Summer 2010)

As you can guess the folowing list may be subject to change, but hopefully it won't  The rig will be more for gaming, but as my PC is right next to my bed, it's imperative that I keep things as quiet as possible in idle. Oh. And on the off chance that you read this, my apologies to hybrid2d4x4...

AMD and Intel call a truce

Apparently the infamous rivals have taken a course of action straight out of left-field, and decided to be buddies. Or at least not keep a knife held to each others throat. http://technologizer.com/2009/11/12/intel-and-amd-declare-a-truce-of-sorts/ http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33882559/ns/business-us...

It's not just you. Slim profile fans seem to be as rare as rocking horse pucky, especially in 92mm.

Hope the fan works out for you :)

@DarkKnight I haven't been able to purchase one to date due to the joys of saving up for Xmas  I'm planning on getting one - along with all the other fans for my next build- when I fly out to the US of A to spend some time with my fiancee around Xmas or shortly thereafter. I've decided to go wi...

@hybrid2d4x4 I don't disagree with your comment regarding quads. But considering how fast things are advancing, in 2-3 years when I do buy a quad, even AMD should have managed to get power efficiency down a lot better. Which would mean I'm buying a better quad than those available now, and as they w...

Not sure where you're planning to buy your components from, but it pays to do a little shopping around when you're building a rig. If I may, I'd suggest the Asus VH242H as an alternative monitor. It's 23.6", ideal for gaming, has consistently received good reviews on Newegg, and can be purchased fro...

Thanks Darth Santa Fe :) I'll keep it in mind, though at the moment I'm considering buying the 2000rpm model and running it undervolted. Both the 1000 and 2000 models come with brackets for attaching the fan to a hard drive, so if mounting vertical doesn't work I can try horizontal too. I'd prefer v...

@ntavlas I already have two hard drives suspended vertically in the 3.5" bay in the three hundred I have at the moment. It does work well, but I'd like to remove the hard drive bay area completely on my next build so I have better airflow and I can have a large graphics card with no hassle. Admitted...

Thanks for the replies :D @psiu Would I be right to assume you mean the 1000rpm model? @ntavlas From the look of things, it's doubtful I'll have space to mount a fan anywhere but the front of the bay. A regular 12cm fan is probably going to be blocked off by the 20+4 connector for the motherboard. G...

Scythe Kaze Jyu Slim?

Hi guys. Glad to be finally posting on here instead of just reading the fantastic articles and forum posts. Next summer, I plan to build a new rig using an Antec Three Hundred case. My present intentions are to drill out the hard drive bay and suspend the hard drives (two WD 640 blacks) in the 5.25 ...

I recently discovered a couple of programs that may be of use. For creating an image of the drive, you could use the free edition of Macrium Reflect. And if you want to just create a copy of your present hard drive, you could use Partition Wizard. They're both 32 and 64 bit compatible, if that matte...
