Any reason you are not using the integrated graphics? That should be some easy savings right there.

Re: Existing cases don't support front USB 3.0

In most cases I think this would require a new front panel PCB. You could route/etch one yourself if you were super-enthused.

If I were you I'd look into Intel D510/N10 mobos like this one Intel BOXD510MO Thje 945 chipset uses a lot of power, more than the CPU. Also the Atom -330 and D510 have better performance than the 270 you are looking at. You still need a SATA card, or else a ridiculously priced atom mobo. The D945G...

Re: drop in idle power after overclocking hd 4200 WHY?

the increase in power consumption from the overclock moved your system into a better position along the efficiency curve of your power supply. That would need to be less of a curve and more of an almost vertical line. :) Actually the line would have to bend back on itself, ceasing to be a function!...

If its running that hot without a hdd, what will keep the hdd cool? How hot are the other parts of the board that have no thermal protection? I actually come to the conclusion that the 3.5" drive was not doable because it would almost totally block convective cooling of the north bridge in any posi...

heat and the N270

According to the N270 documentation there is "catastrophic thermal protection" which kicks in at 125C. It is a signal from the chip, so the motherboard has to handle it, but one would assume Intel read their own datasheet when designing the D945GSEJT. The data sheets say the signal goes active at 12...

More D945GSEJT/M350 information

For those who care, I monitored the temperature of the D945GSEJT in a fanless M350 setup with no HDD. Idle in Ubuntu was roughly 50C. Idle in BIOS setup was 60C (no power saving?). MPrime with 2 threads running a type 2 burn-in max out between 75C and 80C. This is all in a 25C room. All very toasty,...

Re: Musings about a fanless PC - will this work?

Originally I was thinking about an Intel D945GSEJT . Seems like a perfect fit - it's a completely fanless ITX sized motherboard, with an option to have a 12V external power supply. I even got a used suitable power supply from a friend (had an opportunity to get one for nearly free). I run a D945GSE...

Atom + 945GSE Chipset?

If you want to minimize your power consumption but you need an x86 system, you might look into an Intel Atom or an AMD Geode board. With the atoms, they will use tons of power unless paired with a mobile chipset (945GSE, not 945GC etc). I use and enjoy an intel D945GSEJT atom board that idles at ~9W...

I have bose active noise cancellation on my car stereo, so its certainly feasible for a PC. However, it isn't as effective as it is on the headphones and only mildly reduces the low frequency noises - it doesn't completely cancel them. Interesting. In terms of 50Hz, which has a wavelength about 22....

Re: Gigabit Atom server board w/ 4 SATA, PCI, PCIe, 4 watts?

"The X7SLA-L has a four-watt power draw while the X7SLA-H draws just eight watts." I think that must be a mistake though, considering the GMA 950 chipset and compared to the power draw of existing Atom mini-itx boards with the same CPU and chipset. You are right on. It sounds like someone saw the p...

sempron 140 underclocks well...

I have a Sempron 140 and experimented with underclocking and core unlocking. At stock settings, unlocking the second core (which was prime stable) resulted in an additional 13/20 watts (idle/load) AC input power (80+ rated supply). While I agree that the under-load per-instruction energy is lowered ...
