is extruded aluminum really that expensive? i know the common die sizes aren't big enough so you might have to go with a few 7" lengths joined together, but aluminum is sitting at around 90 cents per pound and an apple/dell could probably negotiate an 8 pound case-size sink for $15 or so. right? ce...

I don't know if any of you guys have priced large heatsinks, but they are not cheap. There is no way such a gigantic heatsink makes any sort of financial sense, even to a big company like Dell or Apple. The bean counters at either company would be in a fist fight with the engineers who suggested suc...

None of the radio shacks I've ever been to have had the right kind of connectors needed to plug into a motherboard's header. However places like Jameco and Digikey have the connectors. Look through the interconnects section of Jameco's site. Make sure to get the matching female crimp pins to go alon...

What a cool project!

I'm sure alot of people would be greatful if you could post some info about the undervolting and underclocking options present in the BIOS as your mobo is the only socket 939 uATX available right now. Keep up the great work and keep posting pictures! :D

Rough estimate of maximum HD power consumption?

I was talking to a few folks on another forum who swore up and down that a 7200 RPM hard drive pulls more amps to spin up than a "typical" CPU would under 100% load. Obviously this struck me as ridiculous. I was wondering if anyone had heard a rough figure for HD start up? I searched and searched, n...

Gunzee - IMO the two "stealth" fans are probably causing the most noise. My system runs totally fine with no case fans - even though I keep one in the case and hooked up for emergencies, it stays turned off through software. You'd be suprised how little airflow your computer really needs once the ca...

Al - that is very interesting indeed. I'm going to ask him about this topic and see how he responds. What I dont understand from your posts though is where the idea behind the math came from. IIRC Lorentz used sqrt(1 - v^2/c^2) but it was for something entirely different than how time changes as you...

Ed - if you're skilled at soldering, you can get pins that are factory bent 90 degrees. I would be hesitant to desolder pins from a motherboard for warranty reasons, but it looks like you're faced with modification anyway. IMO replacing the straight connector with a 90* equivalent would be the most ...

How I silenced my seeks on my SP1614C for $0.89

I bought an $0.89 package of 54" white nylon shoestrings and used my creativity and dexterity to weave a rig through the various slots, holes, etc in the front of my Evercase 4252 to suspend my drive. The drive will hardly move up and down or front to back, but some side to side motion can occur if ...
