Be careful though, on the newer SATAII's from WD... I don't think they've yet perfected their transfer rates, as I have seen a few reports that actually showed my generation I drives to be MUCH faster than the newer SATAII's. That's good to know because I can't use SATAII on my older P4C800E-Deluxe...

as long as it's not whiney
Yup.
To me an annoying drive is one that makes a high pitched whine but just being able to hear it when it's "working" isn't a problem. To some people any sound is bad.

Western Digital SATA drives? Quiet?
I've been thinking about getting a second harddrive because I've been running out of space lately. I currently have a 120GB Seagate Barracuda of some sort and it's quiet enough ( it doesn't bother me ). Recently I've been setting up new machines for other people with large Western Digital SATA drive...

It wasn't that the card itself got too hot (it can withstand very high temperatures) it's just that it pumped so much hot air into the CPU and motherboard chipset area that my computer actually turned itself off Remember that a passively cooled 6800 doesn't dump any more heat into your case than an...

Just to follow up (as if anyone's gonna see this), I got my 2 Yate Loon fans from Tekgems today. I ordered them on the first and got them on the tenth. That's not bad considering they had to come from San Francisco all the way to the other side of the continent and over the border into Canada. I hav...

You won't be disappointed. I just ordered 2 of the orange ones and learned that the US/CAN exchange rate isn't too bad at the moment. Of course it was $14 for the shipping but that's not too bad consider...

Is this a 1350RPM fan?
Does this look like a 1350RPM Yate Loon?
http://tekgems.com/Products/et-13713-fan-d12sl-12.htm
A d12sl-12 can also be a 100RPM Nexus so it's hard to tell which one it would be. I'm guessing it's a REAL Yate Loon and not a Nexus because they would probably say so on the site if it was.

GPU heatpipe upside down?
I'm assuming that the heatpipe on my Gigabyte Geforce 6800 wouldn't like being installed in one of those cases that opens upon the right side because the motherboard is installed upside down?
They need to be installed with the GPU down right?

Hmm.. VERY interesting
http://www.mcubed-tech.com/eng/Luefterliste.html T-Balancers allow you to run many fans down to 2%. In my experience you can get very effective cooling at surprisingly low rpms if the case and general setup is right. I don't have any fan running much over 600 rpm in my current SLK3000B at normal pc...

I have NO case fans and I never have in any computer I've ever owned. Now that I have my Gigabyte 6800 with a heatpipe I've had to open up the side of my case and point an old 92mm Zalman CPU fan at it. I'd like to be able to close my case side again so here's my question. SO: I'm looking for a good...

so in my view, something is very, very wrong with either your card or the way its temperature is being measured. Definitely, that looks quite wrong. if the card is idling, it should not be generating as much heat. when my system is idling (folding, actually, but the power saving mode kicks in after 5 minutes or so and turns off the video), the GPU seems to hover around 57'C (134'F). IMO if you are going to maintain the configuration you'll soon fry something, probably the graphics card first. If you could afford the card, why don't you get a nice case with two 120 fans. I would suggest 1,200 rpm ones, and use a fan controller to lower them to 900-1,000 under normal use and ful...

another thing gigabyte support insists on is that this card requires a PSU of minimum 480W. my machine has a 300W nexus NX3000. may be they are right, may be this PSU is too feeble for this card. but i don't see any evidence of strain being put on the PSU (the PSU fan doesn't spin up, for instance)...

VERY hot Gigabyte Geforce 6800
I installed a fanless Gigabyte 6800 yesterday. Today I was playing Half-Life2 for a while and my monitor went snap just like if you unplug the VGA cable while it's running. It was kinda scary. I'm gonna install a fanless Gigabyte 6800 and would like to put a large slow turning fan in the rear of my case to pull air away from the heatpipe. Pointing a low rpm fan at the card dropped the cards temps by 10c, it now idles at 50c. I guess it kind of defeats the reasoning behind a passive card, but at least you can pick your own fan.
