I'm not a big fan of the Nexus Real Silent fans. They just run too slow for me. There's no room for the fan to ramp up if the case gets hot. Personally, I'd suggest getting some Yate Loon low-speed fans. I think it was found a few years ago that the Nexus fans were almost identical to the Yate Loon ...

The thing that annoys me them most is the really horrible "Windows Explorer" that they have created. Within Vista it was customizable a little, but was never the same as previous versions of windows regardless of the amount of tweaking. W7 seems to have exactly the same problem. If I cant make it l...

I'm still quite happy with Windows XP SP3 and haven't made the move to Vista or 7. The only things that would force me right now are that I'm currently using a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit processor (set to run in 32-bit mode) so I'm not taking full advantage of my computers power and I can't take advanta...

700W?!?! That's way more than you need. The new Intel chips do use quite a bit of power, but overall, they're not that much worse than P4s. I can confidently say that system would not pass 300W under load. A hard drive doesn't use much power once it's started. Hard drives require significantly more ...

Re: Win 7, what compels you to upgrade?
I've seen the reviews and talked to people who have tested it, and while it does sound much more user friendly for those that aren't so tech savvy, i on the other hand already know Win XP pro inside and out. For me, the only thing I've seen that Win 7 will be able to do that XP cant is SSD optimiza...

That's pretty good considering he made it all himself. It isn't the fastest though. I think the Tesla Roadster has slightly better numbers. I'm glad they're making fuel efficient cars that actually look/perform normally. This isn't targeted at Priuses or the styling of electric cars, but more at the...

I'm not sure how you would follow Neqrom's link posted earlier. Measuring cover temp is a tricky process without the right equipment. I usually just use the internal temperature measurement of the processor or motherboard. You can usually get this in the BIOS or using something like Speedfan. From t...

Strange, my 8200 had a pretty generic OEM fan from one of the big Chinese brands (Sunon, maybe?). It was surprisingly quiet for a 70mm fan, but maybe it just never reached full speed. Maybe I had an especially good sample of a P4, in terms of heat. That said, Dell does love their proprietary stuff....

Funny, because my Dimension 8200 from 2002 was near silent with its original 5400RPM HDD. Of course, it only had a 2GHz P4 and the CPU was from the generation before they got all super hot. Performance was pretty crappy (for 2GHz), though -- I remember being surprised that my 1.7GHz Pentium M lapto...

I took over managing a VERY NOISY old Dell server a few years ago. It had 2 120mm x 120mm x 38mm high speed fans that HOWLED (front and back). After I replaced those with slower 25mm fans, I noticed that the PSU fan growled pretty bad. Sitting within a few feet of it, the PSU fan still forces you to...

I think the MX series are slightly different. I've seen wireless MX-610s and my brother uses an MX Revolution at home. I don't think they have a 'connect' button on the mouse and the receiver. IIRC, there's only a power switch or button on the bottom of the mouse, which implies that the mouse and re...

That's interesting, so each mouse/receiver pair as sold are not "matched". But if one mouse can connect to either PC, what's preventing it from connecting to both PCs simultaneously? The receivers don't talk to each other. I'm kinda worried about when you change batteries on one mouse and have to p...

Sorry about the newbie question but if I go for a 3 pin fan, where do I attach it? On the mobo's PWM 4 pin connector, leaving out the fourth pin? I'm not as familiar with CPUs as I used to be, but if that's a typical mid-range processor, I'd say the system would be hard pressed to draw more than 250W. Anything from a 350W to 430W PSU would be appropriate and give you room to expand. If you're cash constrained and don't stress your computer mu...

I'm running 2 identical Logitech cordless Trackman, with both transmitters/receivers on my desk. The 4-pin fan connectors used by the newer Intel stock heatsink/fans should be backwards compatible to 3 pin fans. If you're using the stock fan, there really isn't a simple/cheap way to put something in between because it's a PWM fan whose speed is determined by the 4th wire. It might be easier to ...

It might seem like a PSU failure wouldn't allow the fans or hard disk to spin up, but if the voltages/signals to the CPU are off, this will happen. I had only tried swapping the PSU as a last ditch effor...

Ditto on what protellect said about the fans and overclocking. I'm skeptical about your 125C temperature. That's awfully high for any CPU (or even GPU). I know server CPUs can probably take slightly higher temps, but most CPUs top out at 70C and I'd be worried about any CPU that goes past 90C. Are y...

Re: Too noisy - P4 dual Xeon in 3U chassis
Polishing heatsinks is not the way to go. That will get you maybe a few degrees off. Unless your heatsinks are really bad, you will get at most 5°C. The only way to get it quieter is to use fewer fans. To move about the same airflow you have now, you'll need larger fans. Larger fans = more airflow ...
