Hard drive silencing at Overclockers.com
http://www.overclockers.com/tips1108/ Just thought it was interesting considering the bad feelings regarding Chris McQuistion's other posts here. In this article, SPCR is mentioned twice witha total of four links (2 to specific articles and 2 to the main page). I think it should be acknowledged tha...

well, I just walked into a local store where they happened to have the G5 on display. I'm no fan of macs as far as value for money or utility goes, but since when is that an issue. Mac buyers are getting design, not performance, and if taken in that light, the G5 is the best thing on the block. I ha...

I think you already hit on both of the advantages of the celeron. Power is one, platform is the other. A 815/Tualatin combo can be cooled silently (or even passively, but IMO not worth the effort), and it has much better flexibility. Get a microATX board with onboard video and sound, and overall pow...

The great thing about the GC 68 is the price. The performance is OK, but make sure you don't pay a whole lot for one. You can also get one of the following: Spire Whisper Rock, Falcon rockII Speeze Whisper Rock, Falcon Rock II (this is the version I have) They are all basically the GC68 plus a tiny ...

The MSI Mega uses an 80mm PSU fan (from the looks of it) and comes with AGP and PCI. It has the ability to use radio/CD/DVD devices without powering on the computer too. Probably quite expensive, but looks to be a good candidate for quiet mods. http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/slim_pc/slm/pro_...

If necessary, what do you guys think about adding fans to this? I'm a little bother that there is a 92mm outgoing fan but no incoming fan -- the best for quietness would be to equalize the pressure, right? I'm wondering if it'd be possible to mount 80mms (1 in each side) and then run them a little ...

Looks very nice. Not as small as most home theatre PC types seem to go for, but could be a nice basis for a quiet home entertainment centre.

Here being? Remember, this is a Canadian site with an international user base. We don't all live in the world's biggest economy. Up north and in a lot of other places there is no newegg.com, Best Buy and Circuit City slugging it out for that big slice of American Pie. Places like here, the expensive...

In Canada, the AX7 runs around $30 if you can find it. Add the cost of a fan, and it's not in the same price category. The AX7 was my first choice, based on info from here. But I just couldn't justify the cost. I'm waiting on getting a fan controller to see how well the el cheapo spire does undervol...

At $16 (Canadian!) for a 80mm heatsink and fan, I am super pleased with my Falcon Rock II - essentially the same thing. Sure, it's not in the same league as a Thermalright or a Zalman, but for about 1/4 the price, how could it be? The fan is not bad either, the noise profile is fairly unobtrusive. I...

Other sites have said they are quiet, but I don't really trust other sites when it comes to noise.
Any plans on silentpcreview testing them? Anyone here heard them?
If they are reasonably quiet, it might make a good way to cool a video card with a large heatsink and a bit of ducting.

Upside down PSU?
I was just thinking about this. I remember hearing about people doing it years ago, but can't remember why. My thought was to take a PSU with a 92/120 fan on the bottom, and invert it so it draws the hot air from the very top of the case. Block all internal vents, remove the rear PSU fan, and open u...

Shuttle got it half right using a 80mm heatpipe to exhaust and cool the cpu. The problem is the dinky 40mm unit in the PSU. It would be cool if this site could find and review some of those small mATX and smaller PSU's. I've seen OEM ones that have a single 80 mounted inside the case pushing air out...

Drilling and filing?
I need to cut out the stamped fan cutouts for my SLK3700, but I don't have a dremel or nibblers. I called my brother in law (a sheet metal fabricator at Ballard). He suggested just drilling out a series of .25" holes really tight together to form the cutout. Then use a half round file to finish it o...

My experiences - Enermax vs Antec
I am going to mod either one very soon, as the noise is driving me crazy, but I thought I would compare the two stock to see which one to keep. I was originally going to sell the Antec so that I could help offset the cost of the SLK3700 i just got. I had the Enermax because my old system blew up bec...

I agree with the others about not worrying too much about getting top end stuff, as your drives are going to be far noisier than anything else. That said, a large heatsink is a good idea. you are going to be running high ambient temps in that closet. Also, good components can probably handle higher ...

The only remotely silent part of that setup is the case. Radeon 8500 fans are not great. The western digital drives are among the loudest of the current generation. Lite-on has a noisy reputation (my burner is nasty, but I rarely use it, so I don't care). And as you mentioned, the retail AMD HSF is ...

Just be aware that the 3700 will suck in considerable dust from the unfiltered intake on the bottom of the bezel. Unless you cover that up of course. I just duct taped an old dryer sheet on the bottom of mine. It may be ghetto, but it works well, and I can replace it for free any week of the year. I...

Do a search for passive in the Anandtech forums. There are several people there who have done passive Tualatin cooling. none that I remember did a passive system though. I think you are OK if you just undervolt as much as you can with a celeron. They are all so cheap now, that you might as well get ...
