Thanks - I certainly will post pictures of the build. I'm going to get my brother to help me with the actual build, as he's built a lot of computers already. Should be fun!
Cheers!

Thanks, frenchie - that helps a lot! I've checked the BIOS section of the motherboard manual and yes, the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P does support both PWM and voltage control, either manually or by auto-detect. So one more question: does the three pin plug on the Noctua fit the 4 pin header on the mother ...

Dumb noob CPU fan speed control question
I really don't understand speed control of CPU fans. Does the CPU fan have to be a PWM fan for the motherboard to automatically control the fan speed, or can you use an ordinary fan? I'm intending to get the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P motherboard with an i7 860 CPU, and a Prolimatech Megahalems CPU cooler...

There's some info here viewtopic.php?t=56878
It's the same card, and I'm considering buying it too. Any other information, especially what temperatures it runs at would be useful.
Cheers!

The hideous jet airplane takeoff sound of my unmodded P4 during a virus scan  . My new PC should fix that. But musically: Salif Keita: "Folon" (Malian singer/songwriter/griot with the most amazing voice, even if some of the instrumentation is a bit "pop" for my tastes.) Steeleye Span - Below th...

Thanks for the reply, Leoros. In fact, I'm now very much considering going for an SSD for the system drive instead of the Velociraptor. The problem becomes: which one, and how big? Clearly at the moment there are only two options: an Intel x25m or an Indilinx-based SSD (like an OCZ Vertex or one of ...

Is there going to be an update of the "Recommended Heatsinks" article to clarify which models are available for socket LGA 1156 CPUs? There hasn't been an update June 1, 2009 and none of the models state whether they can be used with this increasingly common CPU socket. EDIT: in fact, now would be a...

Case fans for P-183 DAW build - which Noctua?
I'm planning a new DAW - i7 860 with a Prolimatech Megahelems CPU cooler in an Antec P-183 case with a passively-cooled GT9800 video card. I'm planning on using the Noctua NF-P12 for the CPU fan, but I'm confused as to which of the Noctua NF-S12 fans to use for the case fans. My intention is to moun...

GIGABYTE 9800GT Silent Cell - anybody using this card?
I'm currently speccing up a DAW PC dual booted for business/moderate gaming. My proposed specs are here http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=56862 I'm considering the GIGABYTE 9800GT Silent Cell as the video card, which got a good review in AtomicPC here http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/R...

Hi from Australia!
Hi all! Just introducing myself - I'm a noob to silencing PCs - my current PC is an aging stock P4 2.8, with its only concessions to quietness being an Antec Sonata case and a passively cooled graphics card. I use it mainly as a DAW, but until now I've only been working with Propellerhead Reason, no...

Scythe Quiet Drive suppliers in Australia????
I'm currently speccing up a new DAW PC, and I'm trying to locate a supplier in Australia of the Scythe Quiet Drive HD enclosures, without success.
Does anybody know of an Australian supplier?
Thanks!

Thanks for that, AudioEditor - I've had a look at most of the stuff re the Velociraptor whine, and it is a bit disconcerting. Some say that so long as you remove the "Icepack" as recommended in the article it's fine; others say it still whines. And it doesn't fit easily into a Scythe Quiet Drive enc...

i7 860 DAW build - please help this poor noob :)
Hi - first post! Newbie questions follow :) I'm in the process of speccing up a new PC that will principally be used as a DAW (running Propellerhead Reason and Record, Windows 7 x64bit - EDIT - ditched XP ), but will be dual boot so I can run my business software and do some moderate gaming. Not ide...
