help me undervolt E8400 (need motherboard recommendations)
I have an E8400 that I would like to undervolt and underclock dramatically, since I am using the CPU in server that will be on quite often. I'd like to push it to its limits, something like 0.8V @ 1GHz. However I am struggling getting anything below 1.1V using the BIOS and CrystalCPUID. The motherbo...

low-cost, passively-cooled Video Card w/ HDMI-Audio Out?
I am looking for the cheapest passively cooled Video Card that has HDMI out and supports HDMI audio. That last part is the unique and important part to me. Thanks for the suggestions!

OK, I know I'm having a conversation with myself, but I figured this could benefit someone else. I took out all PCI cards (two video capture cards), and took out my hardware RAID controller, and reinstalled Vista to a simple IDE drive. After installing the latest drivers on this simple system S3 sta...

OK, I think I'm getting somewhere now. I disabled the Hybrid Sleep mode in Vista and that now allows me to enter Suspend. And now when I wake it up with Wake On Lan, the video actually is resumed. However, it is not responsive. I hit ALT-CTRL-DEL and I get some error message about dwm.exe. Any ideas...

OK, so I went ahead and installed Vista and all of the latest Vista drivers for everything. Now when I select to put the system to Sleep it Restarts instead. So I can't even get the computer to go into standby. I've searched see if anyone has experienced anything like this and I can't come up with a...

It's not unusual for this kind of problem to crop up. S3 is still not a surefire thing, sad in in this day and age. Most often, it's related to video drivers -- the latest ATI ones seem very bad with some boards. In your case, it sounds like there may be settings in the BIOS for how the keyboard/mo...

Finally got around to reinstalling WinXP with the latest drivers, and I still suffer from this problem. The computer simply won't get out of standby entirely. As a last resort I'm going to try installing Vista and seeing if that helps. If not, then I need to start removing any components I have one ...

Sounds like a driver issue, usually related to video card. As an aside, however, try using MCE Standby Tool , also know as MST. It will help you configure your system for both entering standby and resuming. It works on XP and Vista, with or without Media Center--despite the name. Thanks, I'll have ...

Computer Not Entirely Waking up From S3 Standby!
I am building a file server that runs WinXP Pro SP3 on a MSI G33M motherboard. I'm using the latest BIOS and drivers for my system, and have S3 standby enabled in my BIOS settings. I can place the system in standby, but cannot entirely wake it up. What I mean by "entirely" is that I hear the fans, h...

Well, I have 3 GreenPower drives, so they would consume little power when idle. And given that I was originally considering to go with a software RAID solution, during idle, the overhead of having RAID during idle would be 0 (basically no greater than the CPU idle power anyways). So if I decide to g...

low power PCIe RAID-5 card?
I want to build a Windows server and just gave Windows software RAID-5 a chance, but it failed miserably. Performance was fine, but as a test I pulled the power on the system while it was idle. It wasn't even accessing the RAID array, but upon reboot it needed to regenerate the entire array (which t...

like i said, i was shocked by the difference and know better than to think that my experience is somehow the norm. I certainly chalk it up to an unusually power hungry atx board. but in general, even if someone is not going with a small uATX case, they should still consider a uATX board if they're a...

microATX (uATX) the way to go
I had been using a Socket 939 AMD uATX motherboard, and recently thought it'd be better to switch to a full ATX board I had lying around because I was having problems getting RMClock to work with the uATX board. My system included an Opteron 165 overclocked to 2.25 GHZ (stock voltage), 1x 500GB WD H...

does a higher rated CPU necessarily have a higher transitor leakage when running at the same clockspeed than a lower rated CPU of the same family? No. Maybe not necessarily true, but it's extremely likely that a higher rated CPU within the same family will have higher leakage power. For starters, a...
