C7 not so good

The C7 processors are not that great. Atoms are faster and use less power. I'm currently rebuilding my firewall using one of these: http://www.mini-box.com/MSI-IM-945GSE-Mini-ITX-Motherboard?sc=8&category=100 Idle 14W, load 15W. Drop a wireless card into the PCI or mini pcie slot, and you've got a n...

modular cables

I"m a fan of PSUs with modular cables, as they cut down on the clutter. Having said that, the Solo does have a nice area (behind the mobo) for stashing cables out of the way. You'll also want two 92mm intake fans: http://www.jab-tech.com/Scythe-KAMA-FLEX-92-mm-Silent-Case-Fan-Low-Speed-SA0925FDB12L-...

As much as i would like a SPCR comparison to make my decision on according to this my next fans will probably be Scythe SY1225SL12L's. They work sweet with no undervolting required and I can get them at my favourite online store. :-) Handy because i need 10. SPCR review here: http://www.silentpcrev...

MicroCenter / Scythe

I stopped by a MicroCenter today and was pleasantly surprised (even shocked!) to see that they had a range of Scythe fans for sale. Perhaps they've been reading MadShrimps and SPCR? :)

In any case, nice to see that my ears aren't lying when they tell me my 850RPM SlipStream is really quiet.

14cm fans

Scythe makes a 14cm fan, the "Kaze Maru": http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/038/sy1425sl12_detail.html Don't know how good it is. But their other fans (aside from the extra-thick Ultra Kaze) are generally excellent. Update: Just noticed that it is designed for a 12cm fan slot. So maybe not an op...

Just bought one

I just received one that I bought from Logic Supply. The BIOS has temp-based system fan voltage control. I haven't installed an OS on it yet, but it looks good so far. I expect its performance and power usage to be similar to the Eee Box, which uses the same CPU and NB.

PSU

I would love a case with a big slow fan, designed around the PicoPSU, and not concerned with fitting large expansion cards. Haven't seen it yet, though.

Cheaper PSU options

You can also save a bit of money by going with a straight SeaSonic brand S12II. The 430W one is $69 after rebate at Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151033 IIUC it is a bit louder than the Enermax, but it's still quiet. And rock solid quality, with a 5 year warranty.

Yes

I just put together a system with a Solo and the ECS N9600GT-512MX-P GeForce 9600GT 512MB (the one with the huge heat sink). The PCI-E power connector is on the end of the card, and thus it does steal one of the HD sled spots, even with a right-angle SATA connector on the HD. If the PCI-E power conn...

Enclosures are hard to silence

Enclosures are hard to silence. Many of the quietest drives vibrate quite a bit.

Perhaps you could reconsider your need to use an enclosure? Soft mounting in a case is pretty easy, and much quieter.

I like the SP2514N

I've had good luck with the SP2514N. I've bought four of these so far, and they've all been pretty quiet IMO. They vibrate, as all 3.5" drives seem to these days, but if you soft-mount them, they're good. And they're pretty cheap these days: Newegg has them for $70.93 shipped. I think that newer dri...

Compromise

At that price, you're going to have to compromise on performance, or quietness, or both. Note that these prices include shipping, and are from Newegg. Intel's Core 2 Duo chips are the nicest CPUs available right now, but they start at more than $200, which is out of your budget. The P4 chips use way...

picoPSU

My picoPSU has no whine. Something about the design (encasing things in ceramic?) prevents the high-pitched whine most electronics make. My picoPSU-powered EPIA CL6000E is totally silent, except for the occasional noise from its HD (a Samsung SP2514N). It sits in open air, with no case, and stays ve...

dust

Whoops, sorry, typo in my question :( I meant "Do you think I can get away with the stock fans in the P150 case", as in temp wise. Does the stock fan setup create good airflow, is what I meant to ask. To help prevent dusty air from getting sucked in unfiltered, you might want to get a couple low-sp...

Bicycles

Bicycles aren't much fun in unpleasant weather. If it's raining, you're going to get wet. And if it's cold, you better have a special cold-weather helmet, because your summer helmet will neatly ventilate all the heat from your body. And if it's even a bit icy, it's hard to stay upright. My favored f...

Cooling the datacenter

One factor that is likely different for a datacenter is that all the power used (and turned into heat) has to then be removed by an AC system. And AC systems chew up power like anything. So the cost savings from a more efficient PSU will be substantially larger than the simple calculation would sugg...

mini-itx systems make good file servers. They're small and don't use much power. You might be able to pick up a used one cheap. A new one would run you $100-$200, plus another $70 for the power converter and AC adapter. A word of warning, though: the C3 chips are really, really slow. I have a CL6000...

I also had a NeoHE fail to boot a Biostar TForce 6100-939. The same mobo was fine with a Fortron. I think it's disgraceful that Antec didn't do a full recall of these PSUs. I understand that doing so would be expensive, and so the bosses at Antec aren't keen to do it, but really, the NeoHEs are aggr...

Anyone had P150 compatibility problems with a Biostar TForce 6100-939? Is the 300GB model as quiet? Note that that's a three-platter drive at 133 MB/platter, whereas the P120 series are two platters, at 125 MB/platter. More platters usually implies more power and more noise. T: http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/SpinPointTSeries/HardDiskDrive_SpinPointTSeri...

PATA available

The PATA model, the SP2514N, is in stock at various places. One is on its way to me at this very moment!

I hope it's as great as the SP2504C that SR reviewed.
