Re: New PC build

Thanks Japanese Capacitor and.CA_Steve. I'll follow your advice. I haven't yet heard back from the shop, so I don't know yet which are available (if any), tho. Regarding the GPU and possible compatibility, I got no luck finding ASUS mail contact here in Portugal, but they have phone, during the week...

Spinning down the unused drives: I'm hoping Windows + all your apps + your working data will be on the SSD with all of the HDDs used for longer term storage. In any case, you can set the HDDs to spin down when not needed by going into: Windows Settings/Power and Sleep/Additional power settings/chan...

Re: New PC build

We should wonder for a while about fans for your case - model, amount and placement. Generally from case fans and created fan curves will depend, if this computer will be quiet or not. You can check my own build in General Gallery to compare yours with how quiet computers can be nowadays. And I hav...

Re: New PC build

Thanks, Japanese Capacitor. The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster, the news of the day today is that they found a supplier with the Corsair 650RMx. :) Another problem solved. Regarding the CPU cooler, after reading your post this afternoon I mailed the shop, asking if they can get t...

Re: New PC build

Today I asked about the Gigabyte board suggested above by Japanese Capacitor, but it isn't available for the next 2 weeks, so I ordered something relatively similar, the Asus TUF Gaming B550-Plus. It seems to be better than the B450 boards, so I'm happy that's solved. Also already ordered... AMD Ryz...

CPU: 3900X - awesome choice Indeed. If for no other reason, it was worth making this thread just due to that, I'm very thankful for all the posts pushing me to AMD. I think the 3900X will be around 30 times (!!!) faster than my current CPU when rendering. :) Cooler: 34 Duo - great performer for gre...

Re: New PC build

Sorry for not posting these past 4 days, I was hoping to gather more info regarding what's available in the shop I mentioned. In the meantime talked to my friend, and found out that he's recovering from COVID19, so this will take a bit more time. But he said he'll send me a budget ASAP. If we talk a...

Re: New PC build

Thank you very much for your posts. You've mentioned reliability which I assume is about hardware - I'll just mention that you should also consider backup and recovery of any irreplaceable data on the disks. Indeed. I'm now trying to back up as much as possible to external hard drives. It would be b...

New PC build

Hi everyone, Thanks to an extremely nice forum member here sending me his unused case fans I managed to extend the life of my PC to 13 years, it's been a fantastic machine (I bought this system based on the suggestions here on this forum, in 2007 or 2008), but yesterday I started having warnings of ...

CPU cooler: Either of those would be fine. - Kotetsu: The original needs an AM4 mounting kit . There is also the Kotetsu Mark II that is AM4 compatible. - Same thing with Mugen 5. There is a Mugen 5 Rev B that supports AM4 w/o extra kit. SSD: Crucial MX300 is slightly cheaper than the 850 EVO. The ...

I asked a friend to check how much the configuration on the post above would be, and haven't received the budget yet, but the more I read about RAM compatibility the more worried I get. Re: Quiet PC build - suggestions

Hi everyone. I got back home 3 weeks ago, and I'm now getting back to the ''PC upgrade'' subject again. Thanks for your posts Steve, and thanks Derek. I think I'm pretty decided to get a Ryzen 1700, it seems the best choice. Thank you very much for your posts, CA Steve. Are you fixated on transferring 4 HDDs to the new system? How about some consolidation to a newer larger drive? Quiet PC build - suggestions

Hi guys. After many delays my 9 years old PC (a Core 2 Duo 8400 with 4GB RAM) is starting to have random failures and I can't delay anymore buying a new machine. I bought that old system based on the suggestions here on this forum, and it has served me very well, I'd appreciate if you can advise me ...

most likely - he dislodged the fan or the fan wires and the fan blades are hitting something. Thanks Steve. It took me 4 or 5 hours - I'm quite slow searching and so on - but I solved this problem. Re: Antec case - screws needed for HDD

Well, it seems I’m having a streak of bad luck, just minutes ago when turning the computer ON it started making a LOT of noise, coming apparently from the frontal fan, near the main HDD tray, near the front bottom of this Antec 182. I restarted the machine, but the noise is still very loud. VERY. It...

Antec case - screws needed for HDD

Hi everyone. Around 8 years ago and due to SPCR I bought an Antec 182 case (plus a motherboard ASUS P5Q-E, and a Core Duo 8400 CPU), and I've been using it as my PC since then. It's quite slow by today's standards, but until I can buy a newer machine it has to keep working. Over the years I added se...

Re: Unusual setup – case and placement recommendations

Thank you for all the posts. A lot of food for thought. NAS I never had a NAS, so maybe it's just the fear of the unknown, but I wonder if the trouble is worth it. Yesterday I spent a few hours reading about NAS, and I must admit that having all the data in one central location is very appealing, bu...

Re: Unusual setup – case and placement recommendations

@ OP, what about a wall-mounted case, or just put your case on a shelf? Or maybe it would be possible to just put PC in the next room and feed the cables you need though the common wall? Putting the PC in the next room isn't possible due to the cable that connects the amplifier to the PC. A wall-mo...

Re: Unusual setup – case and placement recommendations

It depends of your hardware too, but in my own, very personal opinion, the P183 has still a slight edge over the R5 (with the right fans, stock Antec ones are sub-par). Said that, I think that the R5 or Define S should be adequate to that task, though knowing your complete/upcoming specs would help...

Unusual setup – case and placement recommendations

Hi guys, I’m a long time forum user, registered almost 11 years ago (!), and after 8 years with a reasonably silent PC that I built with the precious help of SPCR, with a C2D 8400 and a Ninja cooler and a nice Antec case, I need to upgrade in the coming months to a faster system. My setup is quite u...

Hmm, never listened to one of the VGA options, but compared to the noise emanating atm from my PC it should be a good help. :)

Hi. Thx. You may not believe, but I searched. Not with word "4200" only, tho. Think I used several combinations of words, which gave me pages and pages of not related threads. Used: "geforce 4200 noise", "geforce 4200 noise level", etc... That link is useful, and searching with just "4200" fo...
