Not if you get a decent drive second hand. They're usually built to last since it's companies who buy almost all of them new.

Turn it round. You order a new TV and newegg send you a DVD player with the tags for your TV. You phone them up and demand they send the TV. Newegg say "huh", but realise it's a mistake when they receive back yoru DVD player with the TV details. They then see who was getting that DVD player sent out...

I don't have any recommendations since I'm into pro-audio and use reasonably good monitors rather than PC or Hi-Fi speakers. Anyway, this hum caught my attention... I have decent monitors but I'm getting a hum when combined with my amp (probably my amp is the problem there). This could be a ground l...

What are the devices by the capacitor? Are they used? TYpically a cap like that is for making sure the voltage is smooth and that any sudden demands in current can be met without sagging the rail. To me it comes down to a few factors, whether you want a door on the case, whether the eSATA is something worth having, and if you prefer the look of the new Sonata to the Solo. I have a Solo and think it's a very good case. I prefer the look without a door and am not worried by not having an eSATA ...

If it is the walls reflecting the noise to the user, then reducing the reflections by acoustic treatment could be an easier way to resolve the issue, and allow for any computer used in that space to not suffer the same fate (eg if you upgraded to a larger than 20" imac)

I think so, particularly the hard drive when there's a fair bit of activity (ie flashing), which can light up a small room, and certainly distract someone trying to sleep.

You could acoustically treat that part of the room with a simple trap or panel. I'm guessing the hum isn't that low in frequency, which means hangin some foam or a pillow might damp it enough so it's no longer heard.

I have an NSK2400 and don't hear the hard drive - probably because it's a new WD 2.5" SATA one, that's quiet to begin with. Also since laptop drives don't use as much power, they don't heat as much, and don't require as much cooling, so you can add more damping over some of the intake if you want...

I have a 356, which is the Cedar Mill 65nm running at 3.33GHz with 512kb cache (same as a Northwood), with a quoted Thermal Deisgn Power of 86W. However the 360 running at 3.42 is quoted as 65W, the same as the C2D's except the 2.93GHz X6800.

Zalman CNPS7000 and CNPS7700 compatability of mounting A/775

Does anyone know about the compatability of mounting the 7000 and 7700 CNPS coolers from Zalman? My situation is this: I have a socket-A system ( Asus A7V600 ) that currently has a 7000 on it in an Antec SLK3000B, and a new 775 with the standard Intel cooler that is a bit too noisy. You can buy spray paints for plastics in Homebase or B&Q that work fine. You need to remove the front cover from the drive though. Or stealth it, or buy a new drive. The prices for a new Sony (or other favourite brand) DVD±RW is low enough these days to make them a standrd buy for any PC.

I would suggest the WD 16MB cache series. The 500GB was favourably reviewed, and in the forums people have said the others 320 and 250 are very good. I have a 250 model, but that lives in the server which is in my loft, so I haven't specifically listened to it!
