Neither the Dell patches worked because the drive was so recently manufactured it's got the latest firmware already. There's nothing to be patched. Looked into those previously, Power Booster couldn't see the drive...why I couldn't tell you...it wasn't like it was running externally. As I was finding my new Samsung 2.5" 80gb drive a tad whiney at the top end I decided to buy a Western Digital WD800VE as well and choose between the two to use in my laptop and keep the other as a cloneable backup. Samsung's appear to be in general more prone to vibration than any other make. It's a shame because if they could improve it just a little it would really put all their drives head and shoulders above the competition.

Blimey that's a bold step by them!!...so in effect you can get the new drive, install or transfer whatever you want from the old drive, then package that up and send it off?

I don't have clicks on my WD3200JB. I'd RMA yours if I were you. We're talking one tick or click every 3-30 seconds when idle. It's in a external enclosure and it sits on it's stand on a polystyrene block. I suppose that amplifies the noise slightly but then I use the block to cut down on vibration...

The Scorpio could be quieter, possibly, than the Samsung, but it has issues with head reset/clicking noises that must be dealt w/by the user. Search in the forums on the Scorpio for this. Well the drive is housed in a metal frame/caddy and then connected in the internal bay, plus the frame is held down with a single screw into the bay casing. I would have thought that would be enough, as it's not terribly unusual for laptops to be operating at a slight angle.

Samsung drives are the quietest but do vibrate more than others. So you might want to bear that in mind.

Where abouts in the world are you? Difficult to point you to one if you're in a different continent to me.

It's the vibration that's a killer for most of these enclosures. The oem manufacturers rarely think about it and either provide poor stands or inadequate base 'feet'.
