Mini-ITX Beast Planned with Antec ISK 110

Having been extremely pleased with my first ever build last year, E450 in an Antec ISK 300-65 for HTPC, I'm going to build another mini-itx based system to supersede a 17" HP Probook which I effectively use as a desktop replacement (also the laptop doesn't seem to play nicely with externally run 3TB...

Re: WD Green vs. WD Red for quietness?

I recently bought a 2TB Red to put in one of my old Antec MX-1 enclosures and have found immeasurably quieter seekwise than either of the two versions of Greens I've bought in the last 18 months. Pot luck?

Re: Silverstone Grandia GD05: A Versatile HTPC Case

Sure, this case is sturdy enough to support the weight of a LCD. I'm also not too fond of putting a case (directly) on the floor, but I've put my desktop on a home-made trolley next to my desk: it's just a simple MDF board the size of the case with 4 wheels screwed to the bottom. This way it won't ...

Re: Silverstone Grandia GD05: A Versatile HTPC Case

I'm in the early stages of considering this case in one of two possible situations, neither of which are actually as HTPCs (I built my first one of which earlier in the year). As I am seriously short of desktop space and don't want a PC on the floor, I was thinking of having it on the desk with a mo...

Re: Please recommend HDD

Are you talking about this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152245 I've bought a few of them recently, and they've always been in stock at Newegg every time I check. Yes, in the UK it went in and out of stock until units with a dual SKU# of HD204UI/ST2000DL004 started a...

Re: Please recommend HDD

Seagate bought Samsung's HDD production, http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/19/us-samsung-seagate-idUSTRE73I1CG20110419 . No idea if the tech has changed underneath, but I doubt it would - at worst they'll be using different part vendors or binning quality. Yeah I knew Seagate bought their divi...

Re: Please recommend HDD

Quick Q as I'm in the market for a couple of drives. . . I did manage to get a few Samsung HD204UIs before they disappeared. I see they are now back but under the guise of the Seagate ST2000DL004. Has Seagate incorporated the tech or simply rebranded? I liked the Samsungs but Seagate makes me nervou...

Finally after 8 Years - My First (HTPC) Build!

Yes after nigh on 8 years of being a member of this august and esteemed board I'm going to actually build something :!: 8) :!: Having previous tinkered with Xboxes, chosen external enclosures/drives and investigated laptops I've decided to finally get out the Philips screwdriver set and don the anti...

Re: Samsung LN55C650 55" LCD HDTV

I have the European 40" model and it definitely has an element of backlight buzz/whine on any setting below max. It's not the worst thing in the world but a tuned ear will hear it. I don't believe it's as bad a problem as people have been having with Samsung's 37" units, there's a Youtube video of o...

Re: F4 HD204UI Vibration variance?

This thread is a few months old but I would it was worthy of an addition. I've just bought a new HD204UI from Amazon.co.uk (UK stock). I already had two I bought from eBuyer (both grey imports), one a month or so ago, the other from the back end of last year. I would say the new drive (dated 2011.02...

I am about to purchase about 6 of these, can someone confirm for me that they are exactly 2TB, not 2TB but can only use something like 1.7TB
They are 2,000,396,288,000 bytes = 1.81TB

Re: SpinPoint EcoGreen F4EG 2TB HD204UI/Z4

I've just put one in an external caddy and IMO the seek noise is noticeably quieter than a HD154UI. I did a full format and you'd barely know it was there. I'd intended to use it as purely a backup drive but if it impresses me further after I've copied a large bulk of files I may employ it for daily...

This CULV version doesn't as yet seem to be available in the UK.

My side interest here is how low the latency is on these things. If it's reasonably low then it could make a useful little audio recorder/mixing machine when paired with a USB interface of choice.

Re: Looking for a 20-23" monitor, any recommendations?

Don't be so sure. Samsung is probably the most popular and widely sold monitor brand. No surprise that it would garner the most criticism (and probably praise, too, tho most people are less vocal when something works well.) I can only perform what is akin to little more than cursory glance in terms...

Looking for a 20-23" monitor, any recommendations?

I'm looking for a 20-23" monitor to complement my 17" laptop and small netbook. I think I can just about cope with a 1920x1080 res, my 17" machine's 1600x900 and I can live with the text size, bar the need of a slight bump up on browsing. From looking here and elsewhere, when it comes down to noise,...

Raidsonic IcyBox IB-370U-B External Enclosure

Anyone had experience with this enclosure? I'm interested by the adjustable fan switch. It may well make a racket but at least you could alter/turn off at your discretion.

I think it probably is worth putting a 'fair warning' with the article. I wouldn't say the fan is loud in itself but the tone it produces is. A contradictory statement I suppose but that's the best way I can explain it. Perhaps SPCR could contact Antec on our behalf to find out what the fan situatio...

I've got two MX-1s, one fan is definitely louder than the other. They were both bought at the same time in UK. It's slightly annoying purely because of the frequency but I tend to use the louder one for backups. I'm just about to buy a couple more, based on the fact no one else has a better solution...

Another option would be to get a dual bay enclosure and use it to suspend one drive the normal elastic cord way. You'd probably have to replace the fan with a better one. That's something I had considered but you sort of lose the element of portability. As for the rest, well they are much of a much...

Current 3.5" external enclosure of choice?

I've got to buy two new drive enclosures, probably before Xmas, as I've found something bizarre going on noisewise with a couple I already have.
