Re: Silencing a multi-purpose computer

Welcome to SPCR! Socket 1156 is replaced by socket 1155, so I would change the CPU and Mainboard to: Core i5-2500K for ~200$ or Core i7-2600K for ~320$, ASUS P8P67-M Pro or MSI H67MA-E45. You should not put SSDs in a RAID because they cannot use TRIM. TRIM signals when a sector is no longer in use a...

Re: EPCN Fanless or Puget Serenity SCPR? (+processor advice)

I disagree. With a "substatial stereo setup" and a sensitivity to noise you should go for noiseless.
I would go for the HFX classic.
For the CPU i would choose the i760, for SCII the fastest graphics card you can configure at EndPCNoise: the 240GT.

Re: Silent PSU for new Sandy Bridge computer?

I searched for more ITX cases with standard PSUs and both external 5.25" AND 3.5" drives. The Morex 6610B is all I could find. It looks well ventilated, both the top and sides have vetilation holes, but it looks a bit odd in shape (to me at least). If you don't need an external 3.5" drive you get mo...

Re: Silent PSU for new Sandy Bridge computer?

Finally, would it be an option to use the case I specified above, but with a PicoPSU & PowerBrick mounted inside the case? Or would that generate too much heat? Perhaps it could work if the SFX PSU that comes with the case is replaced by a fan? It could. It's hard to say what CPU coolers will fit w...

Are there SFF/ITX cases that fit this bill, or at the very least mATX towers? Lots. Won't fit.
Try this one.
The case only fits MATX PSUs and very short CPU coolers. There are better options if you want a quiet system.

Re: Building a HTPC/server with an old Core 2 Duo (E6300)

Have you considered using a Lian Li Q07 with a Pico PSU?
That leaves room for the biggest coolers and can be very quiet.
The Lian Li Q11 is a bit bigger, with room for a dual slot graphics card, a 3.5" hard drive and two 2.5" drives.

Re: Recommend a quiet gigawatt or higher PSU?

Peak power draw using Furmark is 600W. Asking about a silent crossfire system however is oxymoronic. Or just moronic. To silence a video card you need an aftermarket cooler. An Arctic Cooling extreme needs three slots. You would need a mainboard to fit them and change the coolers yourself and loose...

I was using a RAIDed drive with 2,5GB in XP. The page size was 4k, it was REALLY slow. I multibooted to WIN7 and lost almost all data.
Now I'm using an external 2GB drive.
Upgrade your OS or stay below 2GB on XP. Avoid XP and 4K page size on hard drives like the plague!

Re: Seeking silence for a 500$ computer as we spend extra ~2

The Scythe Mugen 2 is 1mm shorter than the Hyper 212. It comes with a Scythe PWM fan. If it's no more than the Hyper 212 + Scythe fan I'd go with that it. The Mugen comes with a backplate which makes installation a little harder, but the extra pressure will give you lower CPU temps. A very quiet 577...
