I just grabbed the open-box Biostar 760G board mentioned in a thread on here--along with a 4450e (slightly slower than the 5050e). Board from Newegg, cpu from ebay. Hopefully I get under 30W idle also.

I think there's been some people using them on videocards and whatnot. That amount of CFM should be fine for HD's, you're just trying to get some air moving around the drives and taking the heat elsewhere--where your exhaust fans will do the dumping out of the case. In fact you could probably underv...

I've been using VMC (Vista Media Center) for about a year and a half now. Been the only real use of the computer--for a year or so it was on an SD TV with dual analog tuners getting either cable or antenna. Then I had it set up with dual digital converter boxes with IR blasters after the digital swi...

Does Sage cost money up front or subscription? You could just use WMC instead. Joinnnnnnn usssss.... You could probably skip the "OS" drive. A drive that small is probably old, or at the least old tech. If you're just using the computer as a media unit the Green drive should be fine. The onboard gra...

Welcome to SPCR! you could probably make at least $50 on ebay with that dual-core socket-939 btw. Do you have any ebay or heatware feedback for anyone here to check out? the other stuff you might be able to sell cheap on ebay and get a bucks for them...or maybe some of the other tech forums (Anandte...

Makes sure you use capacitors with a low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance). If they don't have low ESR, the very high peak currents in the circuit will cause them to heat up, shortening their lifespan. Yep--these were Rubycon MBZ 6.3V 3300uF caps with "ultra-low ESR for VRM" according to the spec ...

A mini re-capping guide
Intro: This summer I ended up re-doing our HTPC, I had an extra AMD BE-2300 (45W) laying around, so I figured I could make the machine into an HD capable HTPC with our HDTV. I found an Asus AM2 motherboard on ebay for under $30 shipped, but when it arrived, I found that the capacitors right at the ...

I've run 9600 GT with 350W PSU with C2D cpu with no problems. Its not wattages really, its the amperages on the lines. High quality 400W+ PSU's have better amperages on the lines than most crappy or no-name 600W+ PSU's. That is why its always important to use high quality PSU's from reliable names....

Could just use a Gparted livecd for that matter....the gui makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and it doesn't do anything until you hit the go button (so you can review your pending operations first and avoid any screw-ups). Also...backup any really important data first  edit: Did you just panic ...

I bet a 4670 or 4770 with an AC S2 (or even S1 for future use) would be plenty for you, especially if you are satisfied with the onboard so far. Or if you waited until the mid-range 5000-series come out (5770 or 5670) in a few months. just for comparison sake: the 4850 has 800 unified shaders. the 4...

Based on your current hardware and stated needs, you could probably go much cheaper with slightly older hardware (ie C2D and DDR2). Throw in a Geforce 9400-9600 (I believe Nv has better Linux compatibility, but you should double-check that) and a modern HD (I've been quite happy with the WD Blue 640...

Not sure if you are in North America or not--if not I would think the 14" Timeline with Intel dual core would be the way to go. Reports I've seen indicate the single-core has trouble with HD Youtube content (aka Flash is a piece of crap). Unfortunately they don't seem to really offer the dual-core m...

Heck yeah. Waiting for the 5670--in my perfect world it won't require external power, idle at 10W, and have the power of a 4870.lechuck wrote:I'd agree with Meato. I look forward to 56x0 series - if they manage to get rid of power adapter and also lower idle power draw, well lower than 4670 that is.

My understanding of the audio is that Nvidia is better on the AMD platform as well, but if you're limited anyway by the receiver it's not going to affect you I think. I use our HTPC to record HD and some Hulu watching, it's an AMD 1.9GHz dual core which so far is nice and smooth especially compared ...

WELCOME TO SPCR! Any plans for gaming? And what kind of audio demands do you look for regarding Bluray playback? Anandtech just had a comparison of the integrated chipsets when it comes to HTPC demands, Intel on Nvidia seems the best for right now. Although an AMD on ATI combo is good if your audio ...

Along with monitoring the GPU, it also is a PWM controller. This means that the PWM controller is no...

The ringing/whining is in background all the time but it does not bother me until there is silence and then I notice it. Prognosis is it won't get any worse but it is unlikely to go away.
