Re: Holy Cow! I hate Comcast

I'm had pretty much the same conversation with them :) We moved about 15 miles from where we lived before and had to change from COX (that worked well and always picked up the phone) to Comcast... Not only are they more expensive after the "great" 6 months deal, their internet offer doesn't include ...

Re: Chalk up another win for corporations

People die from the e. coli on organic food too. Did you know that organic fertilizer often contains e. coli whereas chemicals do not? Why does it contain e-coli ? Because you get it from animals that have e-coli (the ones that eat corn mostly) and the fertilizer (ie the manure) is not handled prop...

Re: Super Efficient Cars [very large pictures]

You'd be better off taking the engine from a small trailer mounted generator of the type you often see used on building sites. I hadn't thought of that... I wonder how those things would do with a proper muffler... The image I have in my head of those engines (from when I worked on construction sit...

Re: Super Efficient Cars [very large pictures]

The Smart ForTwo Diesel is pretty poor if you consider that while it may be fairly efficient, other, much larger cars can match this fuel efficiency whilst being more practical and substantially faster. 3.3l/100km is very good but not when you compare it to the BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics which mig...

Re: Super Efficient Cars [very large pictures]

Hi Neil, out of curiosity, would it make any sense to use a small gas engine, maybe a 0.8 liter engine (or smaller ?) would do it, running at it's most efficient rpm, to run an alternator to charge the batteries (constant rpm, no need for a transmission) ? The Smart Fortwo has a 0.8 L cdi engine tha...

Factory farming is NOT necessary. This is a fraud invented by Monsanto and their friends to justify selling their crap, and forcing people who don't want any of it to buy it anyways ! And then they can use all the money that they have to bribe lawmakers into passing laws that suit them. fyi : http://...

Hi, don't you wish you had a loud computer ? That would explain the noise !! just kidding... Yes, it's possible. Turn off the computer and listen to what happens. You could also move the case to the other side of the desk if it's possible, and listen... Think about where you are when using...

Re: Mysterious electric hum...

It tends to be a certain combination of motherboard and/or gpu and/or psu that causes the noise. It's hard to figure out exactly what is causing it. In your case, the motherboard is the only other possibility I can think about since the noise is still there with all the other stuff removed. On one o...

Since it's not the gpu, or the psu, or the hard drive, the only thing left in the case is the motherboard...
You could try an rma if it is still under warranty, and see what happens with the replacement.

Hi, Welcome to SPCR ! Have you tried the tube method ? Take a tube (the cardboard inside of a roll of paper towel works great), put your ear at one end and move the other end around the open case. It should help you pin point where the noise is coming from. It is strange you still hear something whe...

Re: Building HTPC - Would appreciate feedback on parts

Stock cooler might work. Try it out and see if you're happy with it. Boot with just the psu, cpu, ram and one ssd connected to the mobo (to keep other noises to a minimum), and see what the noise is like (use the computer like you would in real life, playing videos, some basic games...). If it's alr...

Welcome to SPCR ! I have no experience with the PSU you're suggesting, but it's overly powerful for your system (I'm guessing you'll be using below 80 watts under artificial load), and is not on the editor's choice list (for 100 euros, I would pick something else). Get a non stock cpu cooler, any o...

Phone plans are super expensive in the US with the major carriers (Verizon), especially for simple plans (few minutes, and few texts). Next month, my 2 years contract with VZ is over and I'll be switching to Page Plus : same network, but $12 a month for 250 minutes and 250 texts, same for my wife (t...

Re: Advice for system components

Hi, IMO, you have way too many fans for a system that will be using around 100 watts. Try one exhaust fan first (at 6V I'd say), and see what your temps and noise are like. To give you an idea, I have a system that pulls around 330 Watts 24/7 and it runs perfectly fine with only one 120mm Nexus fan ...

Hello, Have you tried running the Macho without a fan ? If it were me, I'd get rid of the fan on the macho, and block all the empty vented pci slots, pipe holes... how much air is coming out of your back fan ? It should be quite a bit given how much heat is generated on full load... Finally, if noth...

Re: Power Lost - A Better Way to Compare PSU Efficiency

This is impressive, thanks CA_Steve !!
I noticed that the power lost goes down at lower loads for some PSUs (X400 for example, 19W at 150W and 16W at 200W). Is this still withing the margin of error or is there a logical explanation ? Just wondering...
