Why are you against getting a drive and a box and putting it together yourself? I got a 400GB seagate IDE drive for around $200 and a AMS Venus DS3 enclosure for around $35 and put together a great drive for backup. The box even has a fan, which is audible but not loud. If you had it on 24/7, it mi...

Pre-built external needed
The time has come when I need to upgrade my 120gb Iomega drive (does mew a bit), the gb space isn't enough anymore. Now I did try a 250gb one and it's was so noisy it had to go back instantly. While I have some Samsung 160gb Spinpoints in some external enclosures I wouldn't particularly want to tran...

Did you try whispertec? They're mentioned in the two posts right above yours in "Sticky for the UK" . They seem to have them. Not sure about their stock levels though. Savastore used to have them but not anymore. I spoke to the guy who runs it...appears to be a bit of a one man operation. He's havi...

Sorry for the delayed response...I was all ready to get mine modded (not by myself I'm too lazy/incompetent  ) but I was having trouble getting the drive I was after. Now, I've decided to get one of the 5400rpm 3.5" Samsung drives. However, you can't get them in the UK anymore. So I'm going to ...

Well I've just replaced my Tosh 4019GAX (which died) with a 6026GAX in my laptop and I can't see much difference in idle noise. Always gonna be some whine but you have to stick your head next to the laptop and discern it over the fan(s). IMO it's no great issue. Seek noise is better with the new dri...

I'm speaking entirely as a person who's never had to replace his Toshiba laptop hard drive, but I've not known Toshiba to be malicious about replacing your hardware. I know that years ago, my parents upgraded the hard drive on my mother's Toshiba laptop without too much incident (though I recall a ...

Well I've tried to do the best research I can... Toshiba are quite frankly useless..they either don't know their own products or simply aren't given any information. What I have gleaned is that my machine should be able to support up to 80gb. Now whether the product recovery CDs will work with any o...

I think my laptop's HDD is ill..so time to replace?
I noticed the other day a slight hum coming from my Toshiba laptop (5100-503) and I thought it was one or other of the fans. After doing a quick check and blowing out some of the dust it didn't seem to make much of a difference. But what I did notice is when I lifted up the machine when it's on the ...

Seems 5400rpm Samsungs are like gold dust in the UK. :( On ebay, german sellers seem to have quite a few and I've found a modchip supplier that does them. In fact they have something quite interesting. It's a pre-prepped tray for the HDD and fan housing. They appeared to have done the hard (and liab...

How about the Samsung SV1203? 120gb is a decent size and it's 5400rpm. I've found one for £60, not the cheapest in the world but I'm sure it would be pretty quiet and it seems by and large to be lockable. Only problem is the delivery is a bit steep making the whole thing £70, making it look less ap...

I use a Seagate 7200.7 in mine, and its pretty quiet (though the Samsungs in my PC are quieter). However, the real noise problem with the Xbox (at least mine) is the fan. I replaced it with one I found at Directron (it was an awkward size- 70mm, I believe), but its still much too loud. I'll be tryi...

Yeah, OCUK have an appalling reputation for customer service and returns. I've ordered from them twice and never had a problem, but then I've never needed either their customer service or returns service. http://www.romulus2.com/feedback/company.php?35 for evidence. If you are trying to determine N...

here Although this may not be very helpful, I might add that the owner of overclockers.co.uk has affiliations with a white supremacist organisation - if that influences your opinion. Not much evidence to go on...but I'm tempted to have a dig around the net later in a detective stylee. I'm never use...

Re: www.overclockers.co.uk for nidec motor samsung spinpoint
hi, i ordered two spinpoints from overclockers for raid 0. sods law had it that one was a nidec and the other a jvc. i simply phoned up overclockers and the guy on sales went to the storeroom found a nidec sent it to me and allowed me to rma the jvc motor. he also did not charge me for delivery on ...

AFAIK, the 7K250 (and presumably 7K400), with the updated firmware to eliminate the miaow sound every 10 minutes, is actually a pretty quiet drive, though not as quiet as a Samsung P80. Pending more info on the Maxline III acoustics, I'd guess the IBM's the quietest 250+ GB drive at present. And I'...

It's all putting me off doing a system build (well that and money ). I don't want to have to pack 3 or 4 160gb drives into a case to get the storage that can be achieved by 1 or 2 'next gen' drives. Perhaps, as said, you have to look it in tradeoff terms...as I want a good 250gb+ as a backup in...

Well, the recent message from Seagate doesn't look promising: http://forums.storagereview.net/index.php?showtopic=17037&hl=7200.8 I'm also trying to find a 250GB drive, but Hitachi 7k250 is looking live it has the Deathstar bug and Maxtos Maxline III I'm not sure of (in acoustical terms). Hopefully...

Any news on the higher capacity Spinpoints?
I'm really looking to get a nice big drive for a bit of Uber backing up, so is there an ETA on the higher capacity Samsungs? I haven't heard much for awhile.

External HDDs always vibrate enough so the surface on which they rest resonate along... causing the noise to be much louder than when that same drive is suspended in a case. My solution is to place the external HDD/enclosure on a pad of soft foam. Gets rid of much of the noise. A Samsung or Seagate...

Mouse mat uses
I've been using a mouse mat and blu-tak to limit the vibrations from my external spinpoint on the table for some time...and it made me wonder how effective mouse mats are across the board for silencing uses. I was thinking of buying a bulk lot off ebay (seems dirt cheap to do so) but was wondering a...
