Re: Server "Tycho" - Fractal Design Define XL w/15 HDDs.

I believe I know what you are talking about, the Google hdd failure test published some time ago (and discussed here in the forums), but it would be wrong to say that "hotter is better than cooler"...it depends on the temperature range really... Here in Greece a set of poorly cooled hdds, even Gree...

Re: Server "Tycho" - Fractal Design Define XL w/15 HDDs.

I will do some item-specific posts reviewing each bit more in depth later on if there's interest in that - this thread is more for the overall build process. I would be very interested to read reports about the cooling of the hdds in the lower chamber (with / without the "door", although I'd guess ...

Some explanations about the problem noticed by Pierre: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4159/ocz-vertex-3-pro-preview-the-first-sf2500-ssd/6 The values in that article are for a large SSD. Adjust for a lower capacity and you get Pierre's problem. Notice how TRIM is basically useless (not in general: j...

Re: Server "Tycho" - Fractal Design Define XL w/15 HDDs.

I have to say - just on the "hand behind the grille" feel the top fan does more than the reviews would suggest... there's a reasonable amount of air moving out the back, even while the fan is set to an inaudible level. I'm happy to leave it there at this stage unless there proves to be a better opt...

Re: Server "Tycho" - Fractal Design Define XL w/15 HDDs.

I am very interested in this project... I had my eye on this case, I was in contact with Fractal-Design during its production and I had been waiting months for a review...I did not proceed to buy it though, partly because my case-noise issue was to an extent resolved with Green/Low Power drives, par...

Re: Got an SSD for performance and silence, but what about T

I posted this back in the first page, that bench results at least seemed to get better (the real performance test - copying a large archive were not as good but confirmed the improved performance)... I ran 3 benches since, they were a little lower than the 1/3 numbers mostly. Between benches and ave...

Re: Got an SSD for performance and silence, but what about T

I have no idea what is going on. I was merely stating what was possible, not what I think was particularly likely. What I suggested was that the controller might not take advantage of the information it gets through TRIM to defragment internally and create empty "flash blocks" as other drives seem ...

Re: Got an SSD for performance and silence, but what about T

@who1zep Thank you for your willingness...I cannot really recommend a benchmark/test that would not have an effect on your drive (temporary at best)... I don't like the idea of a sustained performance drop of 1/3 at all either, but it might well be the case... To test for degradation one would need ...

Re: Got an SSD for performance and silence, but what about T

The tests are of course valuable but "QB" is also spreading confusion. She writes: "One thing you should know about NAND is that it only has a limited amount of writes... so why would a drive actually write a zero? It is just deleteing the block from it's lists (i.e. turning it off)." That would ma...

Re: Got an SSD for performance and silence, but what about T

Ok, I did a little bit more research today and it seems the issue is much complicated... - Firstly, Sandforce SSDs do not play well even with default MS ahci driver...this may be the fault of both of them, MS's working for a universal driver and SF not doing optimizations...testing for TRIM support ...

Very informative HFat...I think I'm slowly starting to get the gist... 7 as such does not take up so much RAM. I assume it would not run well on 128M like XP used to (I'm not going to try!) but it runs fine much less RAM than you've got. The "recommended" size was always nonsense but I recall when p...

Re: Got an SSD for performance and silence, but what about T

It matters to SandForce drives whether you're writing zeroes or random data. We don't know how much it matters but it's got to matter or their compression is just a gimmick to beat the competition at meaningless benchmarks. If the controller does a good job, it'll have unallocated flash to write yo...

Re: Got an SSD for performance and silence, but what about T

How much free space do you actually have on that drive? I have an original 128gb gskill falcon from release, with updates, and it slows down alot when I have less than 20gb free, but goes right back to near new speed once I free up space. Trim only happens when you delete stuff. Right now free spac...

Are you comparing the results of two different tests? That may not be valid. Not comparing, just bringing in the discussion a bench result that qualifies the statement 33% isn't that big a deal, since if this bench is taken into account, the degradation is actually greater... Actually, you're the o...

20 minutes of random writes and sequential write performance drops by over 85%! Obviously that's a problem with that controller. But that's the context in which I say that a performance loss of 33% isn't that big of a deal. Sure, if it keeps dropping at this rate, you have a problem. But we don't k...
