i know ppl have removed their fans off radeon 9000s that came with a fan

but what about a radeon 9000 pro? can that work well without a fan?
i'm thinking of the tyan 9000 pro 64mb http://www.tyan.com/products/html/g9000pro.html

or is it not even worth it to pay extra for the pro, even if it does work without the fan?

I have a 9000 Pro with the fan unplugged (Mfrd. by ATI, stock heatsink) with a PC P&C at 5v running over it. The GPU is around case temp.

That Tyan (the 9000 Pro) one would run fine with the fan unplugged. That heatsink is huge compared to the ATI stock ones.

According to tomshardware.com, it looks like the Geforce FX5200 (competitor to the Radeon 9000/9200) will be fanless. Should be worth a try for the Geforce fans out there (no pun intended ).

Isn't Gainward producing a silent version of the GeForce FX?

here's something from bjorn3d

it also looks like the 9600 doesn't need extra power = less heat = less cooling = less noise :)

"Moving to a .13 process means the ability to pack more stuff into a smaller die as well as make the chipset use less power. ATI talked about the possibility to get a fan-less version of the Radeon 9600 which uses no fan. For anyone who wants to build a quiet PC this sounds like a great product"
