By 2007, say "Hasta La Vista, Baby" to scouring the world for desktop motherboards to rest your Pentium M's in.

To sum up the article:

Intel plans to marry their desktop and notebook chips into a single line codenamed "Merom" in 2007.

Sounds good to me.

If they already know what they're going to do, and what the chip will be called, then why not build it now?

It's like me telling you guys I am going to have a 10 year old son in the year 2016, and he will be a good guitar player.

It's going to happen, but we have to wait for it

Seriously more on topic, I think it's a good thing that they will be de-emphasizing the all out MHZ race, because it's getting us nowhere but hotter faster.

Why not do it now?

So they can milk their cow run for all it's worth, of course!

They only switch to this strategy not because they think it's nice to have cool processors, but because they don't see any choice.

In my opinion a better analogy would be: we'll stop selling the public inefficient medication with serious side effects (+ false advertising) by the year 2007 or so, take or leave a few years. Maybe.

:)

Not too surprising with me. Hopefully in 2007 I can buy a dual core, low power, hyperthreaded CPU that'll scream.

Incidentally, I was thinking about buying a new CPU for a HTPC I've been building, but I pushed it back when I saw performance decoding and encoding WMV 1080P files....I think I'm going to wait a bit. :D The things we're going to be able to doto video with the next round of processors is going to be worth the wait, I think....
