Wow - n00b getting good results

Post by wooglin » Wed Oct 27, 2004 4:17 pm

OK... long story short, my system specs
Original:
Celeron 2.66, stock intel HS
ASUS P4R800-V Delux mobo
512mb Samsung DDR400 (2x256)
1 WD 80GB HD, 1 WD 120GB HD
Onboard Video, sound, stock everything
Hauppauge Tuner Card (PVR 250)
- hot, noisy, headache inducing....

Added - Enermax Noisetaker 370W PSU
- quieter

Added - 2 Silenex 80x80 fans (1 in, 1 exhaust)
- so much cooler, slight (very slight) increase in noise... not enough to bother me
CPUBURN = 55cpu/47mobo

Added - Zalman's CNPS7000A-AlCu
wow. I repeat... WOW
with the fanmate turned all the way down, CPUBURN maxed at 53 after an hour, 47 at the mobo, but super quiet compared to stock.
At idle, the CPU actually reads cooler than the mobo by 2 degrees (38/40), 24 is the ambient temp. - and this is with the PSU fan at ~700rpm and the CPU fan at around 1450rpm.

This has turned into an addiction. I can't believe the temp difference and how much the sound level has dropped with the 7000.

When I started, the PSU was the loudest component... then it was the CPU, now it's the PSU again... Where does it end?

Thanks everyone, for the excellent articles and super forums!

Usually it ends with the hard drive being the loudest component of the system (which is why I'm so eagerly waiting for the new Seagate 7200.8 ). HDD is always the trickiest component to silence. You could put it in a noiseisolating box but it would trap heat, and unlike other components like mobo or CPU, HDDs are very sensitive to the temperature - I wouldn't risk my data for the silence, that I just can't do... :?

It ends when you can hear the inductors on your motherboard. :(

Hehehe.

HD noise I can live with. The only intensive HD work performed is the video recorder, but seeing as any noise is overshadowed by the speakers, it's a non issue.

I really can't believe the difference in adding a quality PSU and CPU cooler. I laugh when I see some of the modded gamer systems in comupter shops, with the dozen fans and bling lights all over. Quiet is good.

HTPC recording is???

I added a Hauppauge TV Tuner card, using it as a video recorder instead of the crappy VCR.

Ah, I understand.

Yes for recording television, but for the bedroom. And the case is still a mini-tower, nothing special.
