Too bad the quietest 40x20mm fan I've ever heard, even when it's run at 5V, is waaay too whiny for a quiet system.

The Sunon on Swiftechs MC 159 is pretty good at 5v imo unless you are running with your case open.. The problem is I can't find it for sale without the heatsink, only verson availible is noticably louder.

Maybe I got unlucky and got a bad sample, but the MC159 that I had an opportunity to use had a typically whiny Sunon 40mm fan on it.

The 40mm are nutoriuos whiners. I shifted the one on my IC7 with a low noise Papst. Have tried both the 20mm and 10mm deep ones. Only when I ran it at 40% was it ok. However I removed it all together, as I couldn't stand the noise. Fact is they move so little air that if you undervolt them, they won't move any. All in all 40mm fans and silent computing does not match.

for hds, i'm sure people are aware of fujitsu's 2.5" sata drives and seagate's super expensive savvio 2.5" scsi drives; in addition, for external enclosures, these folks offer various kits:

which can house two to eight 3.5" drives (or perhaps twice the amount for 2.5" drives with some modding?) and uses rear mounted 80mm fans; i think with a low speed fans + passive drive coolers (zalman, smartdrive, etc) may provide a good multi drive solution for those with micro-atx cases.

I don't know about that specific PSU, but the 2.0GHz Pentium-M + 2.5" HDD system that I'm playing with only draws around 53-55W at full load, so it seems like you should be OK with a fairly low powered PSU.

Not much about silence of cource from that site but they do mention power and heat

Our cooling this time around for our Pentium-M CPU consisted of a Swiftech MCX15 series chipset cooler built for AMD and Intel motherboard chipsets, so no water cooling was used as usual. As you will notice through our benchmarks, we were able to run a very stable CPU clock speed of 2.53GHz on a stock 2GHz Pentium-M CPU. A healthy 133MHz Front Side Bus and 19 multiplier made this all very easy. At these speeds our memory bus was at a manageable DDR374 speed.
