This is the Intel 'Shelton' processor: essentially a Pentium M stripped of its L2 cache.

Any commercial product that is focused on silence, cost and/or small form factor is most welcome, IMHO.

Seems in a year or two the 'developing countries' platforms of Intel (Shelton) and AMD (PIC) will catch up with my current system (Celeron 1.2).

Intel Shelton processor is made using Intel’s 130nm process technology and is based on the Intel Pentium M “Banias” architecture, HKEPC.com web-site reported on Thursday. The chip does not have L2 cache, unlike the majority of today’s central processing units, and works at a core-clock in the range on 1.00GHz, sources said.
Intel Corp. has apparently also developed a special platform for the chip. According to the report, the mainboard for the Shelton is based on the i845GV core-logic and comes in micro-ITX form-factor. Intel Shelton chip is an embedded processor, which means it cannot be replaced from the mainboard, not allowing system makers or end-users to upgrade or downgrade it.
Full story at X-bit labs here. The picture shows the motherboard, large heatsink on both the chipset and cpu, both fanless. It's supposed to be Asia only.

i845 works with Pentium M?

Why does Intel continue to offer older and mediocre chipsets for the Pentium M?

Intel is heavily invested in the P4 for the desktop through at least next year.

This is a cheap solution for developing countries. If they use the newest fastest technologies in that, then there will be grey import in the rich countries undercutting their cash cow markets.

Here is a test of the motherboard and cpu, if you can read Chinese characters or run it through a translator. On the last page is a performance comparison to a Via C3 1.0G combo.
'Ol man is convinced, based on the Super Pi performance, that the Shelton does have L2 cache, even though it doesn't show up in CPU-Z (on page 3 of the HKEPC test).

Good choice Ed. I was hesitating between this one and the pentium M. I got the later which seem to be even faster for gaming, while consuming less.

What's you super pi 1M score ? mine is 39s at 2.2Ghz.
