I wouldn't bother with the cordless one. I've had mine a few years and don't use it much. Why? Short battery life (for typical PC modding), lower speed due to being cordless, and larger size due to having a battery on the back. Yes it's more manouverable, and you don't have to find a mains socket to use it, but IMHO they doesn't make up for the shortfalls.

Search the forums for "dremel". This question has been answered several times.

The bottom line is that they are not cheap.
There are only two brands that I know of that are reckoned to be decent: the original Dremel, and Black & Decker's dremel clone (can't remember what they call it).

I have the Black & Decker and it works quite well.

Hello:

I would probably get the standard unit. I own the battery unit (the later one) and while it worked fine -- the problem is that the button that you hold the shaft in place with while you change bits, *totally* wore out, and I cannot change bits anymore!

The metal is just too soft and there is no way to repair it. So, I would steer clear of it.

Get the one with the continuously variable speed. There are ones that have on/off, or on/lo/hi, and there are ones that have a slider to adjust the speed. Get the one with the slider.

This one

I have the older one that only does 30,000 rpm, don't know if that makes much difference. It's probably not really worth getting one of the fancy digital ones. (anyone have one and want to correct me? might be time for a new toy)

Don't bother with the battery one.

As long as the chuck/collet on it is one-eigth inch (which is pretty much standard), they will work. I actually use cheap no-brand cutting wheels in my Dremel-brand tool. They wear out :? and break  in a hurry, but i've got hundreds of spares. 8)

That looks almost, if not completely, identical to the one I have.

And yes you can use any brand of extras you like so long as you have a collet to take it that fits in your chuck. Black and Decker have a seriously limited range of bits compared to Dremel, so I went straight out and bought a couple of extra Dremel collets to allow me to take some of the tools B&D didn't have, and then bought Dremel extras like more drill bits and so on.
I've not had a problem yet.

By the way, if you're in the UK, you can't beat this site for supplies:

I have the newest cordless Dremel Model 8000-1 with litium ion battery. My battery life is excelent! 10.8v! that's more power than most corded models! Cranks up to 35,000rpm! I love it. It has treated me very well. Highly recomended!
