What do the memory timings mean?

Post by Athlon Powers » Fri May 09, 2003 5:41 am

RAS, CAS I have no clue. Could someone tell me what they all mean and if some are dependant on others? Thanks!

And what "real world" performance is there when changing from say something like 2.5-3-3-6 to 2-2-2-5? Is it worth spending twice as much for fancy heatsinked sticks or should I just OC by a few MHz for the same benefit?

Always wondered about those numbers :?

Well, I have all my timings as tight as they can be except the CAS Latency because my KT333 board has stability problems with CAS 2.0. But otherwise I get 100MB/s on memory tests but that's it. Unfortunately that's the best I can do because I cant adjust my memory speeds.

Check out the Ultimate BIOS optimiztion guide.

It has more answers than you have questions.

from the bendchmarks ive seen the benchmarks between cas 2.5 and cas 3 is pretty big, but between 2.5 and 2 is very small gain.

To be honest I find this concept VERY rare.

I'm using a stick of generic memory, though its Samsung chips (1 x DDR 2100, 512Mb). At the moment timings are CAS 2-2-2-5, though it posted, I want to know the actual settings. The SPD timings aren't listed on the stick of RAM so I have no clue what they are! Does anyone know of a program that will read the SPD recommendations (my BIOS doesn't reflect the changes in the timings if I switch from manual to SPD specified timings).
