Hard Drive Shock Absorbtion Enclosure

Post by phreddyroze » Thu Oct 09, 2003 1:35 pm

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a hard drive enclosure for a 3 1/2" hard drive that has shock absorbtion?

This hard drive is going to be mounted in a Rack Mount which is mounted in a ATA Flight Approved Rack with shock mounting.

The computer is going to be on the road a lot in a truck, and shock mounting is crucial.

I was wondering if anybody knows of an enclosure for a hard drive like this?

Thanks to all who reply.

Would the NoVibeswork? If you don't use the last top O-ring, it has enough flex to be a very good shock absorbing system.

IMHO....I'd probably use a laptop drive in that situation. They handle shock much better than a std 3.5" drive.

yeah, a laptop drive suspended with elastic should have no problem.

what I use is a school supply kit from K-mart/Office supply stores and some foam. It gives about 1/2" to 1" of room on all sides of the drive, easily snaps shut and doesn't look dorky... plus it only costs about $1.

[edit]

oh, do you mean for operation? dunno... I would be worried about a no-vibes because I wouldn't think that the rubber used in them would have enough tension or be strong enough.

I'd probably go with a laptop drive too.

There's some new 7200rpm laptop drives (IBM I think, I don't keep up with notebook stuff) available now so your performance would be fairly close to that of a desktop drive.

If notebooks drives are the way, then I'd suggest the new Seagate. Quiet & fast.
