A 3.5" SSHD is a bit of a weird use case. I have the feeling that if a 3.5" drive fits, you can very likely fit a pure SSD for the OS and programs as well.

As for the Samsung drive, I was hoping that a small drive will finally beat the WD20EARS. Shame ...

Thanks for the review lawrance, i personally really like my 2x M9T, for me they are unoticeble on my PS4 and my enclosure.

I love my (older) SSHD's.
I think hybrid drives have a decent niche to fill consumer computers/electronics. -FTR, my main PC is SSD, with a HDD. my HTPC and family PC have hybrid drives.

I personally found the M9T 2TB very loud when it was not in standby mode, but then it was the only item producing noise in the whole house (300RPM Noctuas make no noise, 980 Strix makes no noise in idle either...).

I wonder how many times would those 8GB be written per day/session... Is there any utility that can show write cycles/wearing level for the internal SSD? I suppose after those 3k/5k/whatever the cells would no longer be able to be written, and the sshd would became... hdd.

5400RPM you mean, right ? M9T is 5400RPM 2.5" drive. Unfortunately i found it to be noisier than 3.5" WD Reds as well.

right, i had my drives mixed...

2.5 drives can be so thinned skinned and have such little mass in the housing, that i think some models can turn out louder than 3.5's.

I've been using Seagate Laptop SSHD 500GB for two months. It took SSHD at least a week to learn what programs I'd frequently used.
After a painfully slow week, the SSHD finally managed to flex its muscles. Boot time / Firefox / Outlook etc showed pretty decent loading time boost.
For example, Firefox loading time was reduced from 12~20 secs to 6~10 secs. I bought it to upgrade my aging 4 years laptop, and it's a worthwhile investment based on my experience.

Btw, my desktop Intel 330 120GB SSD can launch Firefox within 3 secs. Well ..... you got the point.

Weird, I found the Samsung M9T 2TB less disturbing than the WD Red 1Tb when listening to the sound files.
...the Red surely enough has less volume to its noise in the beginning, but when the "whirl" starts, it is quite distinct...in a notebook drive, i think that pronounced noise and vibration are perhaps more of a nuisance.

But I guess you really can't tell until you install the drive in YOUR own laptop; depending on the placement of the hdd and the makeup of the laptop, they could produce different results.
..kinda like with pc cases.

I recently purchased a used Thinkpad T520 and found that the preinstalled Seagate 7200.4 500GB, sitting just below the cpu fan, was producing too much noise in idle, given that the Panasonic fan installed in the T520 is whisper quiet even under load.

So I replaced it with my WD Blue WD5000LPVX (which must be single platter, really thin) and the system is much quieter now (actually now the most disturbing noise in the electromagnetic noise coming from the charger)
I also tried installing it into the "SuperDrive" position, and far away from vents to the side of the chassis, the noise is almost non-existent.

But in the T520, the HDD is practically isolated from contact with the chassis via rubber rails where you have to place the hdd tray in order to install it; so I guess vibration is not that much of an issue.

However 500GB can get filled pretty quickly, so I was considering the following options

1) Hitachi 5K1000, 1TB drive = 55 euros
2) WD Red 1TB = 82 euros (ouch! )
3) Samsung M9T, 2TB drive = 106 euros (awesome!)

If i were to go for 1TB, the Hitachi is the clear winner (would love to see a review, by the way)
I would pay +10-15 euros for the Red, but at 30euros above the cheaper 1tb drive, it is just two much of an acquired taste.
the Samsung M9T sounds quiet enough and the seeks are very muted, but of course it is double the money (for double the capacity, which is a good thing).
...perhaps considering the Red is what brought me to consider the Samsung one, because it is such a better value.

Has any of you owned these disks to compare impressions?

My biggest issue with M9T ? Random beeping. Yes beeping. Not platter noise, not spindown/spinup noise. Serious beeping, it simply makes beeping noises. And i am not alone :

(PS: and it is not a failure like beep, it just makes noises when it is bored. No bad sectors either. And can't be sleep mode, as it does this at both idle and while i am recording something via DVB-C).

Wow, quite awkward though, did not come across it while searching through amazon and newegg ratings or in any review I read.

That makes for a good enough case for the Hitahi 5K1000, but I would sure love to have it reviewed here and check the noise production, can't trust other ratings and surely no subjective impressions...I am quite more sensitive to noise than most.

What I have read is that it has quite low power consumption, which is a strong plus for a laptop drive.

Can't even provide a recording because it is random as hell.
