My updated rig, in progress

Post by Ruiner » Sun Oct 29, 2006 3:20 pm

I upgraded my vid card this week so it seemed a good time for some cooling/quiet mods.
My parts list:
Antec SLK2650-BQE (cheap mediocre case, but smaller than most mid towers and a good layout for my radiator)
Antec Phantom 350
DFI Infinity nf4 with mobile Athlon64 (Newark core) 3400+ @2.5GHz
1 Gig Crucial, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
74GB ADFD Raptor in SmartDrive2002 enclosure

Cooling via: Little River Cascade, MCW50, Eheim 1048, PA160 radiator
Fans are 230VAC Sunon 2123XST, run at 120V. The rear one has a 300 Ohm resistor to slow it a bit. 1/2" ID tubing.
Zalman passive sink for NB.

The fans are inaudible to me, as the case sits under my desk. The HDD is inaudible even up close. The remaining sound is a very light, low frequency hum from the Eheim. I've lined the case with floor tile and thin foam to cut resonance.

Today's mods include the ghetto cardboard chamber divider and the lower chamber now exhausts passively through the PCI slots. The radiator fan blows directly over the passive NB sink and then over the video card.

The upper chamber draws air over the Smartdrive and under the lower fins of the Phantom. I'm planning on cutting an opening in the top of the case directly over the Phantom to expose it's hottest fins to air. I will also be adding mesh to the front drive bay door/cover.

btw, core temps under cpuburn stay around 28C, GPU low 40C range.
The dual chamber mod has dropped my HDD temps from 46C to 40C.
PSU is also palpably cooler.

Nice build! I particularly appreciate how small it is for a WCed rig. BTW, my Smartdrived WD2500KS remains audible, so I'm surprised you can't hear the Raptor. Perhaps my ambient noise is unusually low.

Thanks. I found the new Raptor very quiet even in free air when I was using ghost to transfer my install. I was pretty surprised with it, but I guess they've made some improvements with this new revision. It's definitely quieter than my older 7200 WD JB.
