My "Sleeper" Rig...

Post by tgdrums1990 » Tue May 08, 2007 6:42 pm

Ok so the parts came in today and I began the build up of my "Sleeper" pc. I had this idea a while ago. here is the parts list:

AMD Athlon 3800+ 64 X2
Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 Mobo
1 gig of DDR2 800 Dual Channel Mem
160 gig SATA2 HD
Sony DVD Burner
Case is an OLD gateway pc

Soon to come is an 7600 GS video card

I have no clue how to post pics so I will just provide links...

The best part is the Windows ME sticker. True, you might be able to find a Windows 95 or 98 sticker, but since ME is the single worst OS in the history of all OSes, you gotta run with it.

Another suggestion for the ultimate sleeper: see if you can find an old beige faceplate from a double-speed CD-ROM drive. If I remember correctly, you can even replace the portion of the faceplate that's attached to the drive tray on some drives.

I think the cow-spot box Gateway logo is the best, weren't those the first PIII's to be sold? :D

Check the temperature on that HDD...I think it's running hot. You could check with Speed Fan.

Other then that ...I really like old small cases...looks great...

Also if you are planning to get a Geforce 7600GS I would suggest looking for a HIS 1650 PRO card, because thous take air from the case and exit it outside, but the down side is that it's a 2 slot card.

PS: I kind of liked Windows ME :)

36C is great. But what kind of stress was it under during the night? You should try a stress test and then see how it cools down, I used to have a system in which the HDD kept its cool most of the time, but when I did a stress test (I used the EVEREST stress tester), it got to about 50 (which is still within reasonable limits), and afterwards took about half an hour to get to 47. So I guess it had some trouble finding a way to get rid of the heat. I fear your system may have the same trouble, as the HDD is suspended, without any good airflow around it.

sorry about this question. What do you mean by "sleeper computer?" What is a "sleeper computer?" What is its purpose?

Once again, sorry for the questions.

A sleeper is something that looks ordinary but -- unexpectedly if one was to go by exterior appearance -- has properties of better models. The term is commonly applied to cars.

 nice rig. i'd have sprung for a fancy case while at it, but not necessary.

as for the sleeper definition...well almost there. a street sleeper is a car that looks bone stock on the outside [original body, rims, lights, etc] but underneath it all, its got massive performance.

ie: the video of the street sleeper station wagon thats on youtube.

I usually have the opposite going on--on the outside, it looks like a modern multi-gigahertz eMachines computer. On the inside, it's an antique 466Mhz Celeron. (The original insides died...what do you expect from eMachines?) Or the outside is a P3 class Gateway case; the insides are an older P2 class Gateway 2000.

I deal with a lot of older dead/dying computer equipment. One component which doesn't die is the case. Generally, newer cases look better than older cases, so I'll stick older (working) hardware in a spiffier newer case.

Here's a sleeper... originally a p2-266, then c433, then p3-933, then *breaths* 2600+, then c2d e6600 ;-)

Though I would have avoided the Core 2 Duo sticker all together.
