Solo with a GTX 275 -- some cutting was made

Post by average_joe » Tue Oct 06, 2009 12:01 pm

I love the Solo, but the case is now rather old and doesnt like long video cards, so I had to cut some. And voila, the GTX 275 now fits great.

what on earth is that 1kW for though? The GTX275 can't honestly need that much power...

IIRC the point was that the power use (in %) would be so low that the fan would never ramp up. I remember reading a post about that a few weeks ago, but I don't remember if it was the same person... and I can't find that post!

I'm sorry but this made me LOL. GTX275 + 1000W PSU and then an Intel stock cooler

ha, i understand what you mean, by that, but the efficiency curve isn't very efficient at that point. the same could be done with something like the HX620....or even the 540 is it? something like that. I don't remember all the models, but it's a silly waste of money when you could buy something with lower wattage, and still have the same effect.

Hi!

Nice build, good PSU.

It gives you room for a nice upgrade! :)

Waste of money or not... It's all about headroom.

It never revs up during gameplay (my old VX450 screamed like a pig) and is very silent in low power mode too.

any idea on what it's costing you in terms of power usage compared to your old PSU? could you have lessened the scream by ducting the PSU intake to fresh air?

Power consumption at idle is up by 10W, from 105W to 115W. The scream wasnt caused by heat. More coil whine-ish type of sound. Both my CX400W and VX450W had this problem.

Really? cause I wasn't laughing. The PSU is so overkill its not even funny.

OP: you only have 1 gfx card, and one hdd. you can't be doing heavy overclocking cause u have a stock cooler. The 1kw psu was really not a good purchase.

Nevertheless, nice work on the cable management. It's a nice looking, and probably very capable build. Just not exactly what I would have done..
