Wool??

Post by TheScarf » Mon Feb 23, 2004 2:01 am

Call me old fashioned, and yes, I did grow up on a farm, but in this age of super synthetic do-everythng compounds, has anyone actully tried wool as a vibration dampening material??

I was thinking of using a piece of sheepskin as a bed to sit my noisy IBM deathstar drives on in the bottom of the case, and the reason for this thought was I used to use a piece of lambswool under the discman in the car to stop it skipping, and it performed this task admirably.

It's also fire retardant, and I would assume, be reasonably cheap. I will try it and let you guys know the results in any case (no pun intended, I expect enough dodgy farmer jokes as it is :P ), just interested to see if anyone else was game enough to admit they tried it!

Problem would be that wool is excellent at insulating heat. As long as there is wool just under the drive, there shouldn't be much of a trouble. Let us know if you try it, and how it worked out. It sounds like a sheeper solution, too (sorry, couldn't resist).

Lambs wool is not cheap in the USA. 100% silicone caulk is cheap and is fire rated for use near electrical circuits.

Lambswool is/has been used in speaker cabinets for just that purpose.

It will work, how much effect various degrees of 'fluffyness' will have is not known tho...

Loft/attic insulation works as well

As does thermal lining from body warmers etc.

You can also get material thats supposed to be hung 'inside' curtains for sound proofing purposes.
Have a friend who used two PVA'd layers inside his Sonata to good effect.

At motor factors you should be able to pick up sound deadening pads, which attach by applying heat to make them sticky or are self adhesive.

Food for thought?

How about using thermal lining inside your MS optical mouse to help deaden the clicks?

It works really nicely... er .. so a.... er... friend of a friend ( ) told me

For ultimate efficiency you need to know the frequencies your materials absorb and then use them in a combined manner to get rid of the frequencies that cause a problem... of course remembering that airborne and solid borne require different tactics.

Does this help at all?

Personally I think Lambs wool would have very good 'Bling' tho...
which would go someway to overcoming any short falls it may have 8) 8)

Also bear in mind that wool on the outside of the case would help stop any rogue frequencies that had slipped the net
(just keep it away from... certain types  )

Or even on the back/surrounding walls

Much easier.. and also MUCH cheaper due to the lesser amounts needed....
would be to make a pair of very 'Bling' ear defenders from the wool 8)

Did we want to get into the various properties of different natural woods for case building purposes?

Or even better... M.D.F.

Or even better again...H.D.F.

Or even better again... concrete?

Or even better again... cast Iron?

Or better still... synthetic marble?

Umm... think I'm sounding a bit anal now

Suffice to say.. we can learn an awful... awful lot from the esoteric audio boys.

And NO I'm not talking about B&O or many of the other pretenders. I'm talking proper esoteric.

mmm should be food for thought and discussion  (Hope you don't Scarf... I've just realised I've been on my soapbox.. Sorry  )

Pete

P.S. didn't check this thoroughly.. 'Never mind the Buzzcocks' is on.

Pjotor,... Do you doubt or disbelieve any of it? 8)

Is it not correct?

Maybe  ... it's just a subject that's been very dear to my heart (Sonics in all it's forms) for a long time and I just happen to know.....
something.... about  !

Perhaps I know more than I'm letting on

Or was my verbal verbosity exuberant enough that you were misled into believing I was 'smashed' :-)

I apologise if I mislead... but I thought... no...Think they are all valid points/observasions.

A 'Picture is worth a thousand words'.... but I'm not clever enough to post pictures... or make pictures... so I use the only language I know  .

sometimes I over emphasize... but I apologise because I am also aware that some people perhaps don't know what I know.
(...SOME... MANY (OK perhaps most  ) people know FAR more than me)

I am only trying to make what little I know understanderble  to those who can speak more languages than me. (one at last count)

Willingness to use more than is strictly necassary is not a crime...least not in this country :? ... well not to me any way

I don't intend to offend.

Just pass on as best I can what little knowledge I have.

I apologise if I have offended by my excess.

That's just how I am

One thing that occurred to me...
Would static electricity be a problem with wool?
