Smallest ATX Case suggestion - Please

Post by PCGUY » Sun Jan 02, 2005 8:19 am

I have an old rig which I am planning to strip and build a server.

The config is as follows:

1. Pentium III 733 mhz (I know this is old (:- )
2. 1 GB memory
3. Two hard drives (20 gb and 46 gb)
4. CD drive

I also would like to change the PSU for the above.

I am looking for the SMALLEST ATX case for the above and PSU.

Would like your suggestions please....

my suggestion is to shop around newegg, or any other big stores with a good selection of cases, and just look for beige boxes - they're usually smaller than the "appealing" cases, but you'll have a hard time finding one that has 120 mounts and is small.

About the smallest cases that will fit a full size ATX board are the Antec SLK1650 and SLK2650-BQE. They come with relatively quiet power supplies, which should be especially quiet with the low power requirements of your system. These power supplies can be made even quieter with a fan swap. 5V the 120mm fan and either rig should be very quiet. My guess is that your hard drives will quickly become the loudest components in your rig.

Some cases place the psu next to the motherboard vertically. The height of these is much less than a tower but width is a little bit more. If its the height you are concerned about check these out. There's one here:

Although I must say, I had a similar case for a while and it ran really hot. They also will not accept tall cpu coolers. Not talking about hyper 6 or similar, anything over 7-8 cm is a hard fit.

Hello:

The Evercase is pretty compact -- it is under 20" tall:

If the socket is near the top of the motherboard, you have to choose a HSF that stays less than 1/2" above the top edge of the mobo, because the PS is right there. I'm not sure how you could get a smaller case to fit an ATX motherboard, unless the PS was above part of the mobo...it is also an excellent case for air flow in stock form!

Silverstone LC-01 may do the trick. Though I can't imagine it's terribly cheap.
