Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Droning with 3700bqe side panel

Post by deadhoarse » Sat Jun 18, 2005 12:30 pm

My case is pretty quiet as it is, but one thing I cannot get rid of is this droning (vibration?) sound coming from my side panel. I narrowed it down to the side panel, because when I have the side panel off, the droning no longer exists. Does anyone have any tips on how to quiet the side panel of a 3700bqe?

(Relevant) System Specs:
-Pentium 4 2.8 Northwood w/ CNPS7000-AlCu cooler
-Stock 3700BQE 120mm fan in rear (soon replacing with a Nexus 120mm)
-Seasonic S12-380W power supply
-Panaflo L1A 80mm fan in front, with Zalman Fanmate controller at minimum speed
-ATI Radeon 9500 Pro with stock fan (soon replacing with a VF700-ALCU)
-Hitachi 250gb sata
-Samsung 160gb ata
-Western Digital 180gb ata (soon replacing)

thanks

A mass loader should help with this. Applying it will add a significant amount of mass to the side panel, thereby changing its resonant frequency and hopfully reducing/eliminating the vibration. (I hope that my Physics is correct... it's been a while. ;))

Peel & Seal is probably the most accessible, since it can be purchased from Home Depot or Lowe's. McMaster has something similar, I believe. (You don't specify a location, so I'm assuming that you live in the US.)

Also, if the panel is actually hitting something when it vibrates (rather than the vibration alone producing the noise), applying some insulating materials to separate the two surfaces might be more beneficial.

Hmm, thats a good point. I'm reading the 3700bqe thread now, and it was said that hard drives caused considerable vibration in the case.

My next step will be to disconnet my hard drives and see if that stops the drone.
thanks

Here is good drive mounting technique for the BQE/Sonata drive trays that might help your problem:

Thanks! I am sure that will solve my problem...when I got home tonight, I unplugged all of my hard drives. Vibration from the drives was causing the case as a whole to vibrate. I'll stop by the local hardware store tomorrow and pick up the materials you used.
