best soundproofing for hd noise?
ive redone my rig, and i have my hard disks sat on the case floor, theres a layer of akasa paxmat, a rubberish material called deflex is next, then abit of foam from some packaging.
suspension isnt really a option as 4 drives, plus two drive waterblocks is very heavy
ive got another bit of foam on 1 side, plus abit on the front of the drives.
one of the side panels has a layer of "brown bread" cork and charcoal? or something base, with some speaker wadding over the top... the other has a window.
im wondering what would be the best sound damping material to use, and what should i look for? heavy stuff or more foamish type?

Leo Quan did a simple test of different materials in his article Rubber Boxes & Carved Foam: More HDD Silencing.

Alas, anything that will block sound from escaping will also block heat from escaping. If you ever find something that will block sound but not heat please let the rest of us know immediately. You will earn the eternal gratitude of all SPCR persons!rei wrote:how about the foam that the hds are shipped in?

sorry about my non presence, been rather distracted by guild wars, and having to reinstall windows. i have no less than six different xp's on my boot menue
anyways as a update, i also need to improve the cooling of the drives, as with only 2 powered they get rather more toasty than i would like, the other 2 sit unpowered, so are effectivly heatsinks, dire ones, but still..
im going to use the thermal ecapsulate or whatever its called by koolance, i have 1 packet of it, and will probably by another...
i may also use clay/bluetac/fimo or similer if there sufficently cheap to fill in the larger gaps, saving the more expensive koolance stuff (10quid a pop ) with no suitable alternative suitably cheap enuff to warrent use. theres stuff that sets hard, which i dont want...
ive also got a 5.25 asetek kit

i can probably just about stick them on the front of the drives providing more cooling. plus point being the large surface area of the front of the drive, tho they arent *that* flat.
i have contacted a rubber sheet seller, which i also haveto follow up, if there horribly expensive then ill be molding some deflex for the job
if i may well put the 2 iccle 40mm fans back in the akasa hd cooler thats slung under the raptor aswell.
i also intend to swap the old ide drive (160gig) for a 300gig sata
thus giving me 120gig for windows/apps/games
raptor 36gig for speed/willy waving/tinitus as my one whines
300gig for music (have lots at high quality)
300gig for videos
ill also try and heatsink anything on the mobo that gets hot
