Antec P150

Post by toonz » Tue Apr 11, 2006 2:50 am

Hi everyone,

I've been a member here for ages and been reading these forums for a long time, but haven't started silencing my PC yet. - well... I'm about to.

The first thing I'm going to do is get a P150 case, just concerned at exactly how silent is silent when it comes to the PSU? I was going to build a duct for it to the front of the case.

Any other thoughts on what I should do?

Specs of my PC are:
AMD Athlon 3400+
Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra TC
Gigabyte K8NSNXP s754
2GB Corsair RAM
Gigabyte GV-N68128DH Fanless 6800 VGA
74GB Raptor
200GB Seagate 7200.9 SATA
Sony DRU DVDRW

I just built a system using a P150, without any major emphasis on silence. I would rate the NeoHE supply subjectively as "very quiet," and the included Tri-Cool set to low as "quiet." The VGA card cooler and CPU cooler fans are much louder than those two, in my system. This system also included a suspended Raptor (150GB) which is inaudible in terms of rotational noise and seek noise, unless you bring your ear right up to the case.

I would be surpised if the duct provided any benefit, considering the amount of heat generated by your components. I would think the case fan, even on low, would remove most of the heat, based on the position of the intake duct on the NeoHE.

I've just built a PC around the P150 and I must say that the PSU is very silent. I previously had an Antec Sonata and it is more quiet than this.

Apart from the P150 I have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. I've set the power switch the the CPU fan on the motherboard and enabled Asus Q-Fan in the BIOS. This makes the fan rotate between 800 rpm and 1100 rpm, where it hardly is audible.

I've also installed a 92 mm Antec TriCool fan in the front, since my WDC 250 Gb was getting very hot (~45-50 Celsius). I've set the 92 mm at the lowest setting, like the P150 included 120 mm at the back. All of this makes the PC pretty silent - most of the time the "noise" is drowned by ambient noise, even when sitting less than 1 meter from the PC.

EDIT: Sorry, my CPU cooler is an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro - not the same as yours "Arctic Cooling Silenter 64 TC".

Well PC is all setup - VERY happy with this case and PSU. Very quiet, its silent from where I sit with the PC on the floor beside the desk so extremely pleased.

Forgot to take piccies while I was setting it up, so will take some piccies this week sometime and post in the General Galley.

Thanks for the input guys.
