SLK3000B resonance (newbie)

Post by LazyBoy » Sun Sep 10, 2006 5:12 am

I have a (3 HD) home fileserver in an SLK3000B on a carpeted floor.

It tends to pick up some "resonance" (probably using that word wrong)
with a ~1 second cycle: nnnnNNNNNNnnn...nnnNNNNNNnnn...nnnNNNNNNnnn...

If I walk over and lean on or squeeze the case it'll stop, sometimes just
just while I'm pressing, sometimes for hours. I've had it open,
pressing/holding different things and can't figure out what the source is.

Do I need damping material or is this more fundamental?
Should I be looking for something loose or something too tight?

Thanks,
LB

You rally have not provided enough information, but I will take a stab at it anyway. Try suspending your hard drives.

Does the resonance stop when you place your hand on the side panels of the case (without touching any other part of the case)? If so, you might try the vinyl floor tile mod which several SPCR users have used:
* Find (or buy) some vinyl floor tiles with adhesive backs.
* Measure and cut the floor tiles to size.
* Remove adhesive backing
* Attach the floor tile to the inside of the panel.

Since style doesn't matter so much on the inside cover of your PC, you might try asking a flooring store if they have any leftover vinyl tiles for free (or a very modest price).

Your hard drives are resonating with each other. If you decouple them from the case the sound should stop. There are a number of ways to do it. You can try suspending the drive cage with drive inside of it, or you could take out the drives and suspend them individually, whatever works for you.

Have got the same problem in parent's-PC,
Has only one hard drive (the WD2500YD...unfortunately wasn't able to get KS-version)....

Looking into it now. Probably the HDD-resonance throughtout the whole case, the cushioning the HDD's are in isn't that great like the P180 (I've got myself or the P150 suspension)

Will let you know If I could fix the problem. Try suspension anyway :D

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was the hard drives. But I couldn't understand how the noise transmitted & transformed to all that.

While it was on the carpet, it took real pressure on the case to damp it, not a light touch. For some reason throwing a scrap of plywood under it made it easier to debug than when it was on the carpet.

It was the HDs "beating" against each other (like two guitar strings almost in tune) and resonating the side panel under the mobo and, worst of all, the plastic front. I didn't have any elastic so I used the foam method here: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewto ... 1f5#252351

Thanks all,
LB
