Will a 200mm bigboy fit on top of the p180?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Will a 200mm bigboy fit on top of the p180?

Post by GamingGod » Fri Feb 09, 2007 6:23 am

I was thinking of getting a p180 and modding it a bit. Anyone that owns it know if it would fit a bigboy on the top where the 120mm fan slot currently is?

I doubt it. I looked at the demisions on the antec site.

I assume that the width is the measurement you want to deal with. I also assumed that the width is measured on the front of the case, and it would be the same on the top.

Now, 8.1 cm = 20.574 cm. Now the big boy is 20 cm. That leaves a little more than a half centimeter for: a) room for error (you have to cut perfectly for this to work) and b) the fan's frame.

Two more points. The "fan" is 20cm. Does that measure justthe spinning part or does it include the frame? The frame on both sides is likely close or more than .5 cm. Second, does 8.1 inches measure the outside of the case? If it does the case sides are included in that measure. So the actual measurement on the inside is smaller (by the width of the case's sides.) I don't know if I am making sense to you. Look at this curde diagram.

The green areas are the width of the side panels (not to scale) So the actual room you will have is the space in between the green bars. All of this info assumes that Antec's width measurement is on the outside of the case.

In short, I do not think it will work because you only have 20.574cm to start with. Subtract the case sides. Subtract the fan's frame. Now you have way less than 20 cm.

(all this is my opinion! Please correct me if I'm wrong)

It wont fit unfortunately. There is just 18.5cm of room inside the case, the mobo tray eats up 1cm and the sidepanel mounts take up a ltitle space too. Making it fit would pretty much mean cutting away a piece as wide as the case and also slighyly cut the sidepanels. There is room to mount two 120mm fans on the top though. Im still considering that option myself if my positive pressure idea fails, which i think is pretty likely

I don't know much about modding, and what is possible and such. As an idea, could the Big Boy be fitted on the top? (Outside the case?) It may extend over the sides of the case, and the fan may be larger than the opening itself, but it would still move a lot of air. Could this be done?

The red is the original opening. The green is the modded opening, and the blue would be the fan itself. (not to scale of course)

Yes that could be done, but it would require a lot of work to have it look nice.

I would only do it if it fit inside the case. I knew that it would be really tight. Was just hoping someone with the case could get a measurment so I know for sure. If not my server case will fit a 200mm+ fan easy if I decide to go that way.

You could always put it on the side also...

You mean, where the 220mm fan is now on the $35 Xclio 3060 case? But if you had all that quiet cooling air available, why would you need an expensive case like the P180?

My 3060 provides so much cooling air that I've removed the fan from my PSU. Really quiet PSU, just like any proper passively-cooled PSU. :D

I think that's a great idea you've got there, putting the big fan on the side of the case!

A 140 mm usually can fit top or bottom on standard cases.
