120mm intake fan placement

Post by aztec » Fri Jun 20, 2008 5:33 am

Should an intake fan be as close to the front of the case to be effective?

I curently have an 800RPM fan mounted at the end of the drive cage holder of a Chenbro SR209.

Just had a look and I could actually mount it flush to the front of the case with a pretty simply mod.

I was thinking of doing this, because the case is pretty deep, and with the low-speed fan, I really can't see (or feel) that much air is being drawn in.

*the intake fan is currently 5inches away from the front panel.

Effective for what? I assume you sit in front of the computer. So....acoustically you want fans in the BACK,more distance, least direct sound path. If there's 2 120s at 800 forcing air OUT in the rear.....an equal volume of air will ENTER via whatever openings there are. You can PLAN where those openings are,can duct or deflect, can block some opening or create another. Think it through-it's all logical.
