Difference in screws?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Difference in screws?

Post by Derek Baker » Sun Sep 07, 2008 10:43 am

My new Akasa Mirage V4 came with a huge number of screws of various types.

Among the coarse threaded are two that both have hexagonal heads, but one is smooth underneath, the other has a radiating pattern of lines.

Are these intended for different things?

Thanks.

from my personal experience, i tend to use the screws that are smooth on the motherboard, and hard drives, i leave the course ones for the power supply. they are threaded identically, so there's nothing that suggests one way or another that i know of.

Antec does the same thing. This is one of the "joys" of building a PC. They don't even bother to document it in the user manual.

It's kind of funny i stumbled on a wikipedia article on this subject not too long ago.
It is by no means an exhaustive reference but a good read nonetheless :

Happy tinkering

Wow, I bet you won't find that in Encyclopedia Britannica.

Thanks for the replies. In reverse order:

I'd already found that wiki article.

I've used the patterned ones for the MB - seems secure.

Manual? Akasa include just an exploded view.

Those 6-32 and M3 screws are troublesome. With these aging eyes, I can barely tell the difference. I was recently playing around with an Antec Solo and finally had to sit down and physically sort all the provided screws into little plastic sandwich bags. I wish these case builders (and I guess the component makers) would standardize on either metric or English units (I don't care which). Also, I, too, wish Antec would include something like that wikipedia article with the case. Knowing which screws are included and what they are for would be nice. So, thanks, Blacktales.
