Need suggestions for server case - the more HDs the better

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Need suggestions for server case - the more HDs the better

Post by ct991 » Sat Dec 27, 2008 11:29 pm

I'm looking for a new server case to replace my InWin Q500 24" tower. I'm needing something that will hold a minimum of 8 hard drives, but the more the better. I would like them all to be soft mounted on grommets, like my Antec P180. Other than that, I don't care what it looks like. What should I be looking at? Thanks.

I've been pondering something like the Lian-Li PC-A17 with a couple of 4- or 5-drive Icy Docks mounted sideways (they Icy Docks are wider than they are tall so it might be possible to suspend each dock turned on its side). I'm not sure I'd trust the so-called soft mounting system in that case, but it might be possible to jusy-rig something.

Obviously I'd prefer a steel case, but I haven't found one with that many external 5.25" bays yet.

This one goes to eleven.

No soft mounting.
But with 8-11 drives how quiet could it ever be?
At least its not metal, maybe it wont transmit as much vibration...

Edit
if thats not big enough there's also the kahuna.

The prices of those cases are ridiculous. I'm looking for a "mainstream" case for a lot less money.

I can't find that one. Do you have a link?

I was looking at this one:

9 3.5" bays and 6 5.25" bays that I could convert as well.
I've never heard of the brand before; is this new?

Well, if you really mean "the more HDs the better"...

The Norco RPC-4020 offers 20 hot swappable SATA drive bays in a 4U format.

For a more realistic option for a regular PC, the Lian-Li 7010/7110 offer 10 3.5" HD bays, including 7 hot swappable SATA bays, plus 5 half-height bays.

Antec Three Hundred with a Cooler Master 4-in-3. Not soft mounted though, but it's cheap

I'd just grab an old big tower with a lot of 5.25" slots, buy some clothing elastic, and suspend away. Then again that's just me.
