Question for case modders with machining experience!

Post by mentawl » Sat Apr 25, 2009 3:07 am

Hey folks, I have a quick question that I'm having trouble finding an exact answer to, so I was hoping someone with a greater knowledge of machine tools might be able to help me out.

I'm trying to figure out what kinda tap I'd need to make a "proper" threaded hole for ye old standard PC case screw - which I believe is a 6-32 screw (although I'm still not entirely sure where that designation comes from). Is there such a thing as a 6-32 tap, or do I want a 1/32in tap? It's all very confusing for my metric brain =).

Appreciate any replies. In case anyone's interested, I'm just looking at making a blanking plate for a PSU area, but am kinda interested in affixing it "properly" to the case :).

Hi,

Yes, there is a 6-32 tap -- but this is not a metric size. It's a #6 diameter with 32 threads per inch.

It is quite possible that all you need is to drill the right size hole (slightly smaller than the root of the threads) and the screws are self tapping?
